The Quiet Tower competition is an international competition for the design of an observation tower on the rural, western shore of Latvia. The challenge was to spin this into a tower in the rural parts of New York. Nathan and Reagan's tower "Cattaraugus Crest", is located in Zoar Valley along Cattaraugus Creek near Gowanda, NY. The area has a rich indigenous history of the Haudenosaunee and they made sure to acknowledge the use of land previous to their design. Nathan and Reagan chose to bring contemporary architecture to this otherwise native site, with their designs being abstracted from the Haudenosaunee flag. This tower would be the perfect place for hikers to stop and experience the beautiful nature and gorgeous sights along the creek.

Our second year students took a field trip to Rochester today!

They started the day touring two local architecture firms Dwyer Architectural, LLC and Young + Wright Architectural .
Both firms are located in the same office. They shared some information about each of their focuses and specific requirements for K-12 design and Medical Facility design.
Then students took a break to eat and play some games at Swillburger and moved on to their final stop at the Rochester Unitarian Church.
The church was designed by Louis Kahn. Its unconventional design was intentional and is representative of the church's unique display of religion.

Falling Strata is a part of The Architect's Chair, an international furniture competition hosted by Buildner, with finalists showcased at the Stockholm Furniture Fair. This design tackles the problem between form and function through a transformable system that shifts seamlessly from table to chair using a central axis and a secondary pin system to secure each formation.

A quick look into yesterday's Design Fundamentals 1 critique with Professor Joyce!

This project looks into the thickness of object walls and the connection between interior and exterior space in an abstract form.

We're halfway through the semester with plenty more critiques and pin ups on the way. Our students are gearing up for finals and continuing to share their work along the way!

Our Lecture Series is in full swing!

We started the semester with our Bob Pahl sketching awards hosted by Professor Vlakancic. Our Study abroad program in Sorrento, Italy offers a lot of great opportunities including an Urban Sketching and Journaling course where students have a chance to win this award.

Our second lecture of the series was led by Bob Kocher from In/Ex Architecture in Rochester, NY. He shared his experiences and his changing career path with students, providing examples of his work, and sharing an important message about finding the right place and being open to change and more importantly, growth.

Our third presentation was given by Michael Agate, a long-standing member of the Architecture and Design Department advisory board and an architect at Cannon Design in Buffalo, NY. He gave students some incredible insight into his experience in higher education architecture projects.

Don't miss our next lecture on November 4th at 10:00am with Nathan Rozzi from Rozzi Architects

Work by Jose Zambrano | B-Arch Student | 1st Year | Design Fundamentals 1

When prompted to create a composition from two modified cubic volumes, Jose created an interpenetrated design made of two fin-like volumes. As the large fin is geometrically "cut" to fit perfectly with the small Fin's curvature, the small fin has a curved extrusion on its face to create the illusion of a much larger and more dramatic interconnection. The composition is a conceptual greenhouse structure whose shape derives from a plant sprout.

Civic Gymnasium, Downtown Rochester, NY
This was a comprehensive Studio, hence a great deal of decisions were made to take advantage of site features. Solar shading, sawtooth roofs, and roof overhangs were designed for passive heating and cooling. The composition of the structure is very monolithic creating a heavy and grounded atmosphere.

This project explores the design of a paleontology museum location Allegany NY that primarily focuses on the Devonian Period and fossil discovery. The building's exposed structure acts as a skeleton, shaping the architecture through forms inspired by a skull, spine, and rib cage. Layered spaces and elevation changes create an experience that mimics excavation and the process of discovering fossils within geolocical strata.
