MFA Sculpture at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA)

Please Help us Welcome Guest Koray Duman who will be giving a lecture Tuesday October 6th at 4:00pm.

Duman, founder of the architecture and design studio Büro Koray Duman, invests in the social, cultural, and ecological challenges of our built environment with innovative architectural strategies. As an immigrant and LGBTQ man, Koray expresses in his work the need for architecture to encourage human bonds as a form of cultural advancement, creating spaces that promote inclusion, connectivity, and engagement to form different types of communities.

Prior to establishing Büro Koray Duman in 2013, Koray was the co-founder of Sayigh Duman Architects and previously worked as lead architect on several West Coast museum projects for Frederick Fisher & Partners. Koray has chaired the New Practice Committee at AIA NY, served as a board member of the Clemente Center, and served on the Leadership Council at Van Alen Institute. He is currently a fellow of the Urban Design Forum and sits on the advisory boards of the American Society for Muslim Advancement and ProtoCinema.

Exciting Announcement!! On Tuesday September 29th @4:00pm we will be welcoming Eddie Rodolfo Aparicio as our first visiting artist! Hope to see everyone at the Lecture! Eddie Rodolfo Aparicio’s (b. 1990, Los Angeles, CA; lives and works in Los Angeles, CA) work focuses on the connections between Central America and Los Angeles, identifying multiple sites as a part of the same community and history as a crucial strategy of decolonial practice.

Huge Thanks to Yuri and the team at Glenstone Museum for an incredible trip! Our tour highlighted several of the museum’s permanent outdoor sculptures, offering a closer look at how the works interact with the surrounding landscape and space. A day filled with great conversation, people & art!

Writer, curator, and artist Ruth Estevez has been a guest of Rinehart School of Sculpture since 2021. She has conducted studio visits and guest lectures during her time at Rinehart, and this year was part of our panel for the Thesis evaluations. Her insight and critiques have helped shape many of our students, and she has become a valued guest of our program. Thank you for your continued support of students, Ruth!

We finished out our semester with another great Interdisciplinary Speaker Series day with the DeMartini Family Curator of the Whitney Marcela Guerrero. Thank you to MICA Graduate Studies for putting together this series, our students got a lot of them!

Marcela Guerrero is the DeMartini Family Curator at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York. In 2026, Guerrero along with Drew Sawyer curated the 82nd edition of the Whitney Biennial—the longest-running survey of contemporary art in the United States. Also at the Whitney Museum, she curated no existe un mundo poshuracán: Puerto Rican Art in the Wake of Hurricane Maria (2022-23), Pacha, Llaqta, Wasichay: Indigenous Space, Modern Architecture, New Art (2018), and she was part of the curatorial team that organized Vida Americana: Mexican Muralists Remake American Art, 1925-1945 (2020). From 2014 to 2017 she was a Curatorial Fellow at the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, where she worked on the exhibition Radical Women: Latin American Art, 1960-1985, curated by Cecilia Fajardo-Hill and Andrea Giunta, and organized as part of the Getty Foundation’s Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA initiative. Prior to joining the Hammer, she worked in the Latin American and Latino art department at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, where she served as research coordinator for the International Center for the Arts of the Americas. Guerrero’s writing has appeared in several exhibition catalogues and in art journals such as caa.reviews, ArtNexus, Caribbean Intransit: The Arts Journal, Gulf Coast: A Journal of Literature and Fine Arts, Interventions: International Journal of Postcolonial Studies, and Diálogo. Born and raised in Puerto Rico, Guerrero holds a PhD in art history from the University of Wisconsin, Madison.
