Luddy’s Department of Information and Library Science faculty Devan Ray Donaldson and Yuerong Hu have each received federally funded research awards through the Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian Program, totaling more than $1.1 million.

Donaldson received an Applied Research Grant to lead a three-year project examining what library and archival professionals need to understand about AI data and the artifacts AI systems leave behind to make responsible stewardship decisions. Hu received an Early Career Research Award to study early childhood STEM books that introduce advanced topics such as AI and quantum physics to children age 6 and younger.

Their work will help libraries and archives navigate emerging technologies while developing resources that support professionals, educators, and families.

Two research projects led by Luddy Ph.D. students are examining timely challenges at the intersection of technology and society: harmful video game experiences among teenagers and how misinformation language has evolved in U.S. newspapers.

Ph.D. students Bryce Greene and Brian Pleasants Harper, working with Informatics Professor Christena Nippert-Eng, co-authored “Quantifying the ‘misinformation beat’: 38 years of coverage in major U.S. daily newspapers,” published in the Harvard Kennedy School Misinformation Review. The research analyzes nearly four decades of newspaper coverage to reveal how the language and focus surrounding misinformation have changed over time.

Ph.D. students Nick Abegg and Ritika Gairola, alongside Nippert-Eng and Computer Science Professor Apu Kapadia, co-authored “Normalizing Harm Through Teenagers’ Everyday Experiences with Video Games.” Accepted for the 2026 Proceedings of the ACM Annual Symposium on Computer-Human Interaction in Play, the study explores how teenagers can come to accept manipulative game mechanics and harmful experiences as routine parts of gaming.

Together, the papers highlight Luddy student researchers’ contributions to understanding how digital technologies shape everyday experiences, and how research can inform safer technology design, governance, and policy.

Luddy's new B.S. in Robotics offers six specialized tracks for students to choose from. 🤖 🛠️

Design and build physical robots, conduct computer vision and AI research, program autonomous vehicles and aircraft, and more — students get to choose the track that interests them most.

Luddy's Virtual World Heritage Laboratory, led by Informatics Professor Gabriele Guidi, are part of a four-partner consortium led by Louisville’s Frazier History Museum receiving a three-year grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities to 3D digitize selected Revolutionary War artifacts.
