Last week, the Hamilton Lugar 21st Century Japan Politics and Society Initiative hosted, “The U.S.-Japan Alliance and the Free and Open Indo-Pacific” with a special guest speaker, Minister Masatsugu Odaira from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan. The event was moderated by Adam P. Liff, Ph.D.

Students filled the room as Minister Odaira gave his personal assessment of the current and future U.S.-Japan relations, as related to Prime Minister Takaichi's recent updates in a major speech in Vietnam this past spring.

We were also excited to collaborate with the Indiana University Bloomington Archives on a pop-up exhibit titled, "Batting Around the World, 1922: Hoosiers in Japan," featuring IU Baseball’s 1922 visit to Japan.

JPSI21 aims to educate, raise awareness, and debate policy responses to the various political, social, and foreign policy challenges that Japan faces in this extremely dynamic era of 21st-century change. Initiatives like this one make Hamilton Lugar School of Global & International Studies the cultural hub it is proud to be.

We are honored to announce our keynote speaker for the Global Area Perspectives symposium Ambassador (ret.) Dorothy Shea.

With years of experience, Dorothy Shea brings vast foreign policy expertise and leadership of national security teams and initiatives.

Throughout her career, Shea served as Deputy U.S. Representative to the United Nations including nine months as Acting U.S. Representative to the UN. Among her domestic assignments, she served as Senior Professional Staﬀ Member with the United States Senate Committee on Foreign Relations under then-Ranking Member Richard Lugar.

Dorothy is a liftetime member of the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR). She was also detailed to the National Security Council as the Director for Human Rights and Democracy. Her first posting was in South Africa, during that country’s transition from apartheid to democracy.

Meet the COP31 Student Delegation!

The COP31 student delegations will attend the 31st United Nations Climate Change Conference in Antalya, Türkiye, from November 9 to November 20, 2026 with the mentorship and expertise of Jessica O'Reilly.

The delegates will spend a week completing their own research, as well as networking among policy makers, practitioners, academics, activists, and journalists.

These individuals embody the global mindedness and real-world impact that Hamilton Lugar School of Global & International Studies in partnership with O'Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs at Indiana University, IU College of Arts and Sciences, Indiana University Kelley School of Business and Indiana University School of Education strives to uphold.

Hamilton Lugar has been recognized as one of the top schools in the country for language learning, and our faculty doesn't take that lightly.

We are so excited to spotlight Yingling Bao, teaching professor in the Hamilton Lugar School’s Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures, who has been selected to receive a 2026 Mary Carr Distinguished World Language Service and Leadership Award from the Indiana Foreign Language Teachers Association Inc.

The award recognizes Bao’s work supporting language educators in Indiana and across the country.
