As part of Vanderbilt's Reunion Weekend, we celebrated three Divinity School and Graduate Department of Religion alumni/ae who have dedicated their lives to ministry, teaching, research and service.

Jennifer Bailey, MDiv ’14, was recognized as the Distinguished Alumna for the Divinity School. Bailey is an ordained minister, public theologian and nonprofit leader who founded the Faith Matters Network and co-founded The People’s Supper and brings a faith-centered perspective to civic dialogue and community healing.

Ryan LaMothe, MA ’93, PhD ’94, was recognized as the Distinguished Alumnus for the Graduate Department of Religion. LaMothe is a pastoral theologian, scholar and educator who is praised for his contributions to pastoral and political theology and pastoral psychology.

Margaret Ann Trotter (MAT), MDiv '83, was recognized with the Distinguished Service Award for a career spent at Vanderbilt University Libraries. Through essential library services, MAT has made a lasting impact on generations of students, scholars, and clergy in theological education and research.

“Being able to reflect on my journey and share my experiences with other scholars gave me a deeper appreciation for how much I have learned and grown through my time in the GDR program,” Jai says.

For Carl Hildebrand, a second-year M.Div. student, the Hispanic Scholars Program gave him the opportunity both to reflect deeply on theology and to share meals, conversations and lighthearted sports rivalries with classmates.

"The Hispanic Scholars Program reaffirmed my deep love for all of God’s children and strengthened my ethic of care. It helped me practice holding space for both joy and suffering as inseparable parts of the human experience," he said.

This Hispanic Heritage Month, we are sharing highlights from three Vanderbilt Divinity students who participated in the Hispanic Scholars Program over the summer. For Sophie Esteves Varvella Vicente, a third-year M.Div. candidate, she found that HSP allowed her to see academic spaces as places of cultural recognition, joy and belonging.

Sophie shared that the HSP program paired with her VDS coursework has helped her to understand the history of social movements and why progress can be slow.

"The program has strengthened my conviction that scholarship can be accountable to the people and movements from which it emerges," she said.
