The Office of the Provost announced today that our very own Sandy Daack-Hirsch has been named associate provost for faculty! Daack-Hirsch (86BSN, 98MSN, 07PhD) joined the faculty in 2007 and has served as executive associate dean and dean of faculty since 2020. We will miss Sandy dearly, but are excited for the rest of the university to benefit from her leadership and expertise.

We are pleased to announce that Patricia Groves, associate professor, will be stepping into the role of interim-executive associate dean as Sandy transitions out.

We are thrilled to announce Chad Seering of UI Health Care is our Notable Preceptor 2025-2026 for undergraduate programs. Four BSN students who had Chad as their preceptor for their gerontological nursing practicum nominated him for the award.

One wrote, "Chad provided the best experience at this clinical site. He was an excellent teacher and consistently supportive throughout the semester. He set a great example through his positive interactions with patients, which made a strong impression on my own approach to care. I learned quickly under his guidance and always looked forward to Gero week because of the welcoming and engaging environment."

What do you do when 15 Hawkeyes roll up to your house with a giant RV and a whole lot of bikes? If you're Brenda Duree, CON professor of instruction, you invite them in and have a neighborhood barbecue!

Duree has ridden RAGBRAI herself several times and knows how nice it is to have a home to stay in. When she found out the ride would overnight in Guthrie Center, not far from her home, volunteering to host the UI team was an easy decision.

"In the neighborhood, with family and friends, we provided a barbecue meal for them," says Duree. "They were all so very grateful and wonderfully represented UI."

Every day, preceptors give generously to our students; they give time, expertise, guidance, and so much more. We established the Notable Preceptor Award to recognize their generosity and the impact it has on our students. This year, the Notable Preceptor Award for graduate programs goes to Denise Cundy, executive vice president for quality and operations at Broadlawns Medical Center in Des Moines.

Jacque Hollingshead, a nurse manager at Mary Greeley Medical Center currently pursuing a DNP in the Health Systems: Administration/Executive Leadership program wrote in her nomination: "Denise exemplifies the very best of nursing executive leadership. She consistently earns the respect of those around her, models compassionate leadership in every interaction, and creates an environment where learning, curiosity, and critical thinking are encouraged and celebrated.

What sets Denise apart is her ability to inspire confidence and motivation in those she mentors. She encouraged me to think critically, ask thoughtful questions, and approach challenges with curiosity and purpose. Her example demonstrated how knowledgeable, values-driven leadership can have a powerful and lasting impact on both patient care and professional growth.

Denise's mentorship has influenced my confidence, my critical thinking, and my vision for my future in nursing leadership. I cannot imagine a more deserving recipient of this recognition."

A celebration was held for Denise at Broadlawns in early July.
