A wonderful night celebrating Frank Mitros, MD, Professor Emeritus as he received the Distinguished Alumni Award for Friendship this past Friday. The Award for Friendship recognizes those for their exceptional effort and dedication to Carver College of Medicine's missions of education, research, and service.

Dr. Mitros' teaching philosophy emphasized kindness and encouragement- a style that continues to make an impact on our department today. This style was brought on by his experience in medical school, where he felt that some teachers wanted the material to feel difficult. "I wanted to do the opposite– convince students that if I could understand it, they certainly could, too."

He is also well-known for the Gastrointestinal and Liver Pathology Conference, a weekly conference he founded and led for 35 years, which emphasized clincial-pathologic correlation a time when such interdisciplinary collaboration was far from routine. In this conference, fellows were encouraged to speak, question, and reason through uncertainty, knowing they would be supported.

"Pathologists should not live by glass alone," was a common reminder to trainees. Dr. Mitros underscored the importance of integrating pathology findings with clinical history and laboratory data.

He was joined by his family for the celebration, including his grandson, Henry, who joined him on stage to accept the award. Congratulations again, Dr. Mitros!

Turnaround times for lab results are crucial for patient treatment. And it's one of the many reasons why our NICU continues to move up in rankings.

Our Specialty Care Nurseries Laboratory provides on-site care to the University of Iowa Health Care Stead Family Children's Hospital NICU, Intermediate Care Nursery, Newborn Nursery, Mother-Baby services, and other pediatric areas, performing rapid response services with a turnaround time of 10 minutes or less. Our phlebotomists are even trained draw on some of the smallest patients in the world, some weighing in at just over half a pound, including Nash Keen, who was born at just 21 weeks and holds the world record as the world's most premature baby.

Another successful College of American Pathologists annual meeting in the books!

⭐ Productive day at the Residency and Fellowship Fair. We got to meet with a lot of people on why our programs are great, what Iowa City has to offer, and resources available for trainees.
⭐ Dr. Ying Sae-Sim (pictured right) won a Top 5 Abstract Award with, “Clinicopathologic and Molecular Features of Fusion-Positive and Fusion-Negative Pleomorphic Sarcomas: A Single Institution Study."
⭐ Residents + Fellows ready for a fun week!
⭐ Dr. Matthew Krasowski won a Lifetime Achievement Award for his outstanding leadership as chair of the CAP Toxicology Committee and for his sustained contributions to advancing the specialty of clinical toxicology within laboratory medicine, where he is among a small group of pathologists with deep expertise in toxicology and has consistently championed the growth and integration of toxicology testing in clinical laboratories.

Our donors come to donate for different reasons. For some it's a tradition, to support loved ones, and some feel called to it . For others, it's personal.

Michael Floros visited us this past summer with the goal of donating platelets in 30 states in honor of his nephew, Charlie, who passed away after a brave battle with cancer in 2022 and wore the same number on his high school hockey team. Michael chose to come to University of Iowa DeGowin Blood Center specifically because he prefers to donate at blood centers attached to children's hospitals whenever possible and hopes his donation will help a child battling cancer.

Michael's visit with us marked state 17 out of 30. Donations like Michael's helps us support all blood needs during this critical blood shortage.

Celebrating our Medical Laboratory Science students is one of our favorite things. On Monday we held our scholarship ceremony where we awarded these five students scholarships.

-Ethan Rosendahl and Dani Losen were the recipients of the David and Pamela Buhr Medical Laboratory Sciences Excellence Fund. David and Pamela were able to join us via Zoom to give remarks.
-Alison Megrath, Jennessa Johnson, and Cal Korrison were recipients of the Marilyn Ohm-Smith Pathology Student Scholarship Fund.
-Ethan Rosendahl, Dani Losen, and Alison Megrath were recipients of the Imogene Fisher Scholarship Award.

Medical Laboratory Technicians and Scientists are the heart of our department- and what provides key diagnostics for physicians to guide care plans for our patients at University of Iowa Health Care.

These roles require the utilization of a variety of procedures, tests, and techniques, on biological specimens that will be used in the analysis, diagnosis, prevention, or treatment of disease.
