For students at Western University of Health Sciences in Oregon, the start of the academic school year brings new opportunities to get involved in the community. Each year, a group of students from the Heatherington College of Osteopathic Medicine (WesternU HCOM) and the College of Health Sciences-Northwest (CHS-Northwest) choose to volunteer as mentors in the MIKE Program.

MIKE is a non-profit organization that educates and mentors youth to lead healthy lives and build healthy communities. By connecting mentor volunteers and partner organizations like WesternU with local middle and high schools, MIKE teaches healthy behaviors, increases basic health knowledge and health literacy, and provides exposure to health care career pathways. Originating in the Portland area, the program now serves urban and rural communities throughout Oregon and Southwest Washington. In 2018, the Sweet Home community requested a peer-to-peer mentoring program connecting its high school and the medical school. The partnership with MIKE launched in Sweet Home in 2020, as a pilot program for rural communities. Today, the program continues to serve as a launchpad for innovation and best practices in workforce pipeline development.

Today, we’re proud to spotlight second-year DO students Hayden Manninen and Tiffany Tran for their dedication to serving the Lebanon community through events like the Rural Health Care Equity Fair (RHCEF). As volunteers with the RHCEF, Hayden and Tiffany helped bring together patients, clinicians, and community volunteers for a day focused on accessible, community-centered care.

Their commitment to volunteering is a wonderful example of the impact our students can make beyond the classroom. We’re proud to see Hayden and Tiffany putting the values of service, compassion, and community engagement into action throughout their medical education at WesternU.

📅 Save the date: The next Rural Health Care Equity Fair will be held Saturday, May 1, 2027.

Did you know that Sept. 22 was National Falls Prevention Awareness Day?

To recognize this important day, physical therapy students, faculty, and community members at the Lebanon Senior Center came together to learn about ways to prevent falls and promote healthy aging. Participants explored topics including nutrition, osteoporosis, exercise, safe falling techniques, and fall recovery, while also having the opportunity to complete balance screenings and receive personalized information about their individual fall risks.

For our students, events like this provide valuable opportunities to take what they’ve learned in the classroom and put it into practice while serving members of the community. We’re proud to see our students making a difference through education, connection, and hands-on experiences!
