What Makes a Good Science Major? What Can I Do with a Science Major?

While many think of scientists as those people in white coats who work in a lab all day and rarely see the sun, there are a wide variety of roles that scientists play in modern society. The common features that most who major in the natural sciences share are:
-Good math skills.
-Enjoy Problem solving.
-Fascination with God's creation. Science majors end up in lots of different areas:
-Environmental Research
-Consumer Products Research
-Medicine
-Pharmaceuticals
-Optometry
-Physical Therapy
-Pharmacy

IWU STEM students headed to Boulder, Colorado, over fall break to compete in the Gloo Hackathon alongside Dr. Joshua Nwokeji! Out of 148 teams, they earned a spot among the 28 teams advancing to the finals. Congratulations to the team on this exciting accomplishment!

A look into BIO-216L Science of Nutrition Lab, taught by Dr. Jones, where students explore how food and nutrients impact the body through hands-on laboratory experiences. Students investigate digestion, macronutrients, vitamins and minerals, metabolism, physical activity, and nutrition's role across different life stages. Through laboratory activities, students apply what they learn in lecture to better understand how nutrition supports health and the human body!

A look into BIO-213L Microbiology Lab, taught by Dr. Sattley, where students gain hands-on experience studying microorganisms through a variety of laboratory techniques. Students practice staining techniques, perform physiological tests, and identify bacteria as they build their understanding of microbial structure and function. The class concludes with a fun project where students identify an “unknown species” using the skills they have learned!
