This month, Cardinal Spotting highlights Excellence as we recognize Cardinals across our community who bring their best to what they do and make a positive impact every day.

*Abby Haworth, AVP for Student Affairs and Director of Student Life
Abby’s commitment to excellence can be seen in both the work she accomplishes and the way she supports the people around her. She approaches her work with intentionality, care, and a commitment to doing things well. Abby models excellence by investing in the growth and development of others. She provides support and guidance while also trusting people to take ownership of their work and ideas.

“Her leadership demonstrates that excellence is not simply about producing a strong outcome—it is also about developing people, strengthening teams, and creating opportunities for others to succeed.”
-Olivia V. (Olivia Vecchioli)

*Andrea Sadler, Associate Director of Admissions
Andrea has been such a welcoming and supportive campus partner. She sought out an introduction to me and helped to ensure all lines of connection with the Welcome Center stayed active while my Assistant Director was on leave.

“She has been kind, informative, and has shared important onboarding resources and other connections I needed to make to be successful in my role.”

This not only affects me, but all prospective students and families I encounter that connect to my college through the Welcome Center. Andrea Sadler is an incredible example of excellence on this campus.
-Kate Walgamuth Caward

*Carol Deiwert, Administrative Coordinator for Mathematical Sciences
Carol is the source of seemingly infinite knowledge about the university and its inner workings and will help anyone. She uses this vast knowledge to help math department faculty and staff with a wide range of projects. As faculty in the math department, it probably speaks volumes to say I couldn't count the number of questions Carol has answered for me.

"Carol goes above and beyond by offering to help with tasks that fall far outside of her job description, and she does all of this with a smiling face and a genuine care for the people around her."

On behalf of the Department of Mathematical Sciences, I would like to thank Carol for being who she is and for all that she does for each of us.
-Jenna Menke

*Robert Ramey, Director of Design and Construction
I would like to recognize Robert for his exceptional dedication to bringing Ball State’s new Center for Innovation and Collaboration to life. Whether helping me understand the challenge of adding power where there’s a firewall, assisting with the delivery of the robot, or patiently responding to every small item I’ve raised, Robert has consistently gone above and beyond to address and resolve issues. I so appreciate his commitment to quality, responsiveness, and sense of humor.

"He takes tremendous pride in his work, and it shows."

His efforts are a wonderful example of Excellence in action.
-Bette Smith

Another month, another opportunity to recognize the people who make a difference! Join us as we shine a light on this month’s Cardinal Spotting shout-outs and celebrate those who exemplify Integrity in all they do.

*Diana Blair, Administrative Coordinator for Applied Business Studies
Diana is truly one of the people who keeps our department moving forward. She is dependable, honest, thoughtful, and always willing to help navigate questions, processes, and unexpected situations. When Diana says she will take care of something, you can trust that it will be done!
What stands out most is the way Diana approaches her work with both professionalism and genuine care for the people around her.

“She communicates honestly, treats people fairly, and protects the integrity of University processes. She does the right thing even when it may require additional time or effort.”

Much of what Diana does happens behind the scenes and may not always receive recognition, but her work has a tremendous impact on the success of our faculty, students, programs, and department. We are incredibly fortunate to have someone we can trust and depend on.
-Audrey Robbins

*Ben Armstrong, Nursing Technical Specialist
Ben exhibits a commitment to honesty, ethical practice, authenticity, and accessibility in his daily work. This was especially highlighted over the summer when Ben took on an informal leadership role of the nursing SITC team during the absence of their immediate supervisor. His thoughtfulness to careful consequence-mapping of potential decisions that needed to be made helped us build an immediate "rescue bridge" when some of our faculty were switched from OneDrive to Box. His supervision and mentorship of the nursing SITC team was exactly what team members needed. Ben is authentic in that he shines on our team as someone with creative operational ideas and an approachable, genuine nature.

“He always strives to do the right thing and does his best to anticipate downstream needs and effects.”

We are so grateful to have him on our team!
-Danielle Ely MSN RN CCRN NE-BC

*Becky Fights,Nursing Clinical Laboratory Specialist

"Becky is a pillar on our team, standing strong in the value of integrity and providing wisdom, ideas, and support."

Whether she is revising a simulation event with faculty, at the elbow within simulation alongside nursing students, or collaborating with the nursing simulation center team, she brings empathetic honesty and sound ethical comportment which she cultivated from many years of experience. She is incredibly thoughtful of others and works to ensure no one feels left out or in the dark. I admire Becky's ability to step back from a situation, remove emotion, and use logic to weigh out pros, cons, and pose juxtaposing questions to ensure work is inclusive and fair.
-Danielle Ely MSN RN CCRN NE-BC

Join us in celebrating Diana, Ben, and Becky and the impact they make every day!

September’s Featured Flyer highlights Angel Tuttle, Assistant Director of Commencement and University Events in the Office of the President. Angel is responsible for organizing Spring, Summer, and Fall Commencement ceremonies, as well as approximately 100 other presidential events that welcome guests to our campus throughout the year.

-Why did you choose to work at Ball State?
I graduated from Ball State in 2015 and started my career at a local nonprofit organization. In 2017, I found myself applying for a position within the department I graduated from, so I could give back to the institution who had helped shaped who I am. The great benefits and schedule were also appealing. I’m currently in my ninth year of employment and will reach my 10-year anniversary in January.

-How would you describe the Ball State community?
The Ball State community is made up of so many special people who truly want the best for our students and our University. The passion and the commitment of our faculty and staff are contagious. One of my favorite parts of my job is getting the opportunity to partner with a variety of departments and people across campus. I also think the Ball State community is the perfect size. We’re not too big, but we’re also not too small, so professional relationships can easily be built and strengthened.

-What’s a project or moment here that makes you proud?
In my role, I have been fortunate to be a part of many great projects and moments. One of the top ones that comes to mind is from Spring Commencement this past May. We successfully implemented new security measures, including a clear bag policy and weapon detection systems, while also having one of the most notable speakers in our history at the main ceremony. The Quad was filled with graduates and guests, and there was so much energy and excitement. Looking back at that day, I am proud of our team for all of their hours and work behind the scenes, and I am grateful to all of our campus partners who worked with us to make it a special day for our graduates and their guests.

Thank you for all that you do, Angel! We’re so grateful to have you as part of the Cardinal community.

It’s Quarter 3, and we’re bringing you another CliftonStrengths spotlight!

This quarter, we’re featuring Abby Haworth, Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs and Director of Student Life, who is sharing insight into her CliftonStrengths theme of Consistency. Here’s what she had to say:

“My strengths show up constantly in my daily routine, and I’m so thankful Ball State gave us the opportunity to take the assessment and really develop our talents.

My top strength is Consistency, which honestly caught me off guard at first. My initial thought was, "How is that a strength?!" But as I’ve leaned into it, I see Consistency playing out across both my professional and personal life.

It drives how I support students and staff by creating a fair, predictable environment where expectations are clear and everyone receives the same level of care. Paired with Significance, it helps me stay connected to the real-world impact our office makes on the wider campus community.

My strengths help me see my bigger purpose in my work on campus.”

August’s Featured Flyer highlights Brittany Bales, Assistant Department Chair and Associate Teaching Professor in Special Education. Brittany has the joy of teaching a variety of undergraduate and graduate classes for future special educators. Additionally, she oversees some of the practicum experiences, where she witnesses students putting their knowledge and skills into practice in local classrooms.

-Why did you choose to work at Ball State?
I grew up in Muncie, but had not stepped foot on campus until I was an undergraduate student. It was like a whole new world to me. As a first-generation college student, I was in awe of the possibilities and opportunities that college offered. I completed all my undergraduate and graduate coursework at Ball State, and when I decided to leave the public-school classroom to make a greater impact on education, Ball State wasn’t just the obvious choice for me; it was the dream. I began my journey at Ball State as an adjunct in 2016 and have now completed my 8th year as full-time faculty.

-What’s your favorite part of working here?
The people. I love the people that I work with, and the faculty and staff across campus.

-What do you love about working at Ball State?
I’ve had the privilege of teaching and training hundreds of future educators. I love getting to play a role in their journey to their own classrooms.

Thank you for all that you do, Brittany! We’re so grateful to have you as part of the Cardinal community.
