Federal magistrate judges play a vital role in the administration of justice, from presiding over settlement conferences and specialty courts to helping ensure that justice is administered fairly and efficiently.

In the 2026 Notre Dame Lawyer magazine, four Notre Dame Law alumni—former Magistrate Brian Short ’72, ’75 J.D., Magistrate Judge Michael Bordallo ’83, ’87 J.D., Magistrate Judge Heather McShain ’96, ’99 J.D., and Magistrate Judge Robert Numbers II ’05 J.D.—reflect on their careers, the values that guide their work, and how Notre Dame Law School's mission of service continues to shape their approach to justice.

In this fireside conversation, panelists, including Dean G. Marcus Cole, will discuss the Catholic Church's experience internally with diverse views, the Church's relationship with others, and broader questions about how the Church's own experiences can be a model of deliberation and discourse for building pluralism and strengthening democracy in the United States during its 250th celebrations.

This event is hosted in partnership with Interfaith America and several Notre Dame entities, including Notre Dame Law School's Lindsay and Matt Moroun Religious Liberty Clinic and the Program on Church, State & Society.
