The Blackburn Institute at The University of Alabama is a leadership development & civic engagement program specifically focused on improving the state of Alabama - developing a network of leaders who have a clear understanding of the state’s challenges.

Five students within the Institute partnered with Alabama Entrepreneurship Institute, the EDGE & Selma Resilience Initiative last semester to develop & deliver a one-day certificate program for small business owners. Prior to the event, students formed relationships with small business owners by visiting small businesses around Selma to advertise and recruit. A group of five Blackburn Institute students partnered with the Alabama Entrepreneurship Institute, the EDGE and Selma Resilience Initiative to develop and deliver a one-day certificate program for small business owners last month! The University of Alabama is currently hosting hundreds of the state’s top rising high school seniors for experiential learning of a model state government through American Legion Alabama Boys State (May 24-30) and American Legion Auxiliary Alabama Girls State (May 31-June 5). In addition to activities on UA's campus, Boys & Girls State delegates will visit Montgomery to tour the Capitol and meet with various elected officials. More info: https://go.ua.edu/4wQv1dm

Five The University of Alabama students and one alumnus have been selected for the National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship Program! The NSF GRFP is one of the nation’s most prestigious fellowship programs, providing three years of financial support, over five years, to graduate students who have demonstrated potential for significant achievements in research. This program supports fellowships for outstanding graduate students who are pursuing full-time, research-based master’s and doctoral degrees in science, technology, engineering or math, including STEM education.
