We are thrilled to share that Zachary Budimir, postdoctoral researcher in chemistry, is one of three recipients to be awarded a Interdisciplinary Innovation Fellowship from the One Health Microbiome Center of the Huck Institutes of the Life Sciences!

The funds are intended to advance collaborative research through the development of new skills, tools and approaches that transcend traditional academic boundaries.

The 2016 film, "Arrival," explores the challenges of interspecies communication and alien cognition that might follow from first contact with alien species.

The Penn State Eberly College of Science and Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics will host a free screening of the film at the The State Theatre on Nov. 4 at 6:30 p.m. as part of the college’s Science Matters Spotlight Sessions and Friedman Lectures in Astronomy and Astrophysics.

Following the film, the Penn State Extraterrestrial Intelligence Center will sponsor a Q&A session featuring expert panelists: Sheri Wells-Jensen, professor of linguistics at Bowling Green University, science journalist Nadia Drake, Frances Blanchette, associate research professor of linguistics and psychology and assistant director of Penn State’s Center for Language Science, and Jason Wright, director of the PSETI Center.

Pets of Eberly, featuring Wally 🐕

Wally is Gail McCormick's Chihuahua mix who is always chasing other animals, nibbling toys, and eating. Gail is a science writer and communications specialist for the college's Office of Communications and loves learning about the different research happening across Eberly.

Earlier this year Nathan Keim, associate professor of physics, studied how tape can hold memories.

In a new study, him and his research team, which includes Surendra Padamata, a graduate student in physics, showed that two different types of material memory can coexist in a simple mixture of small particles suspended in a viscous liquid.

The team stirred the suspension of particles and found it could remember the direction it was stirred and how vigorously it was rocked.

Congrats to Wenrui Hao, professor of mathematics, for being named the Dorothy Foehr Huck and J. Lloyd Huck Chair in AI Mathematical Modeling!

Hao is also one of six Eberly researchers to be on teams receiving 2026-27 seed funding from Penn State’s Huck Institutes of the Life Sciences.

The additional researchers are Jesse Lasky, professor of biology, Charles Anderson, professor of biology, Qunhua Li, professor of statistics, Manyu Du, assistant professor of biochemistry and molecular biology, and Justin Silverman, associate professor of statistics.

For 22 years, NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration's Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory has made impactful scientific discoveries, despite its original mission timeframe being two years. 🛰️

With mission control being based on Penn State's University Park campus, researchers at the University and the college were involved in some of the major discoveries to come from Swift.
