For Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Prof Anna-Mart Engelbrecht invites us to imagine care guided by a patient's own tumour rather than averages.

PROMISE, a proposed research project involving Stellenbosch University, Tygerberg Hospital and the SAMRC, aims to grow miniature tumours to test treatments for effectiveness and potential harm to the heart, brain and blood. The project is still seeking funding, but its goal is clear: safer, more personalised cancer care for South African women.

In 2025, approximately 7.1 million African children received no routine vaccinations, putting decades of progress at risk.

In an article for The Conversation Africa, Stellenbosch University's Prof Charles Shey Wiysonge and co-authors Dr Folake Olayinka and Dr Chris Ngwa Akonwi outline five priorities for Africa's new Continental Immunisation Strategy: sustainable financing, stronger digital systems, integration with primary healthcare, community trust and local vaccine production.

Hair-pulling is not simply a bad habit. Trichotillomania is a recognised mental health condition that can cause distress, shame and isolation, yet many people struggle to find professionals who understand it.

In an opinion piece, Stellenbosch University's Prof Rizwana Roomaney and Dan Jenkins share insights from interviews with 20 people living with the condition. They highlight the need for compassionate, informed care and explain how psychological treatment and peer support can help.
