FMHS will be represented at the 18th World Congress on Public Health this Sunday, 6 September, with an interactive session exploring how game-based assessment can support health systems and public health learning in higher education.

Get ready for the Tygerberg Bumper Sports Day on 15 September from 16:00 to 19:00 at the Tygerberg Sports Field.

Students and staff are invited to form teams of 10, with five male and five female players, and take on six fun activities including bubble soccer, mega tower Jenga, gladiator jousting, bowling alley, an inflatable obstacle track, and a soccer and basketball combo. Entry is free, and players must take part in at least three activities.

From a rural hospital in Malawi to international work advancing cervical cancer prevention, Professor Hennie Botha’s career reflects a commitment to better care for women across Africa.

As Executive Head of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Stellenbosch University, his work spans gynaecological oncology, research into cervical cancer and HIV, and the training of specialists now practising across South Africa and the continent. In 2026, he also served as co-chair of a WHO guideline group on HPV DNA genotyping.

As we celebrate 70 years of impact, we honour a legacy built through care, research and the people trained to carry that work forward.

Prof Clive Gray has received the prestigious Royal Society Africa Prize for his pioneering research into the immunological impacts of HIV on maternal and child health.

The award also recognises his significant contribution to building scientific capacity in Africa, including training nearly 400 young scientists and founding Immunopaedia.

Gray hopes the recognition will inspire young African researchers to believe that world-leading science can be done from Africa and have global impact.

🥫 THE TYGERBERG PANTRY PROJECT'S DONATION BINS ARE NOW PERMANENT 🥫

Gomolemo Nkgoedi, chairperson of the Tygerberg Pantry Project, joins Thoriso on AM2PM tomorrow morning at 09:30 to talk about the student-run initiative keeping Maties fed at Stellenbosch University's Tygerberg campus. 🇿🇦

Started by students in 2015, Tygerberg_Pantry_Project gets food, toiletries and sanitary products to students through an anonymous request system, so nobody has to ask for help in front of an audience. This year the project unveiled three permanent donation bins, in the BMRI building, the Clinical building and the Tygerberg Student Centre.

We'll be talking about:
🥫 What a permanent bin actually changes for a student who is running on empty
🤲 Why dignity sits at the centre of how the pantry works
🧴 The needs beyond food, from toiletries to period poverty

A new international collaboration, B-ZERO, involving Stellenbosch University’s Prof Tongai Maponga, has secured a Wellcome Trust Discovery Award to investigate treatment responses in African settings. The team will explore drug concentrations, access to consistent treatment and differences in HBV strains, with the aim of improving outcomes and reducing liver disease and cancer risk.

Today, Prof Elizabeth M. Streicher delivers her inaugural lecture, “Decoding tuberculosis: the evolution of technology, epidemiology and the Mycobacterium tuberculosis genome”.

Drawing on her work in the molecular epidemiology of drug-resistant TB, Prof Streicher will explore how genomic technologies are transforming our understanding of transmission, resistance and TB control in the Western Cape.
