We completed the last SWAT training on workplace based assessment for 2026. This time we had participation from medicine, microbiology, obstetrics, ENT, anaesthetics, psychiatry, gastroenterology, and rheumatology, Thanks to Sa'ad Lahri, Liesl de Waard and Bob Mash for facilitating and the South African Academy of Family Physicians - SAAFP for coordinating.

GREAT for Diabetes Training | George | 25–27 September 2026

A fantastic three days at George Hospital, with healthcare professionals from across the Garden Route: including Medical Officers, nurses, dieticians, Health Promotion Officers and Pharmacy Assistants.

The training equipped participants with practical skills to communicate, facilitate group empowerment and deliver diabetes education in Primary Health Care settings.

We were visited today by Jose Maria Valderas Martinez, known as Chema, the Chair of the World Organization of Family Doctors - WONCA working party on Research. He is on his way to the PRIMAFAMED and WONCA Africa conferences next week in Botswana. He is based in Singapore and has an interest in patient reported outcomes and experiences of healthcare. With him are Bob Mash and Klaus von Pressentin from University of Cape Town.

🏆 Celebrating International Recognition: Prof Doreen Kaura Receives the Bonnie Pedersen Award
The Division of Family Medicine and Primary Care, Stellenbosch University proudly congratulates Professor Doreen Kainyu Kaura on receiving the prestigious International Bonnie Pedersen Award, recognising her exceptional leadership, scholarship, and sustained contributions to maternal and neonatal health in Africa and globally.
The award was presented on 18 June 2026 in Lisbon, Portugal, during the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) Congress. This recognition celebrates Prof Kaura’s commitment to advancing midwifery, strengthening health systems, and improving outcomes for women and newborns.

World Organization of Family Doctors - WONCA had the last word at the WHO Regional Committee for Africa - Bob Mash gave a statement on behalf of the African Region on the need to strengthen research for primary health care and family medicine.

Kwame Boateng and I met with family physicians in Addis Ababa. Dr Aziza Abdella is the President of the Association of Ethiopian Family Medicine Specialists. Currently there are over 100 family physician on the national register and they are trained in two programmes at Addis Ababa University and the Medical College. Most family physicians are working in the public sector and there is an ongoing dialogue with the Ministry of Health on how they can best contribute to the health system. Also in the picture is Dr Assegid Geleta who teaches family medicine and COPC at Addis Ababa UNiversity and Dr Tibebu. We hope that the Association will complete the application for membership of the World Organization of Family Doctors - WONCA soon. We look forward to seeing Dr Abdella at the PRIMAFAMED meeting in Gabarone next month.

Stellenbosch University’s Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences is hosting its 70th Annual Academic Day on 26 and 27 August 2026.

Today, we celebrate our researchers and registrars who are proudly showcasing their work:

4th-year MMED Registrar Marischka de Jong presented her research poster, highlighting the valuable research being undertaken by our registrars.

Simon Bezuidenhout presented his poster, “Peripartum outcomes after TOLAC in two South African district hospitals,” sharing important research on maternal and neonatal outcomes.

We are incredibly proud of their dedication to research, academic excellence and improving healthcare in South Africa. 🩺🌟

Bob Mash made a statement on family medicine on behalf of World Organization of Family Doctors - WONCA to the 76th WHO Regional Committee. Attended by all members states in the African region. This was in relation to the WHO African Workforce Agenda. Prior to this, two countries had specifically mentioned a commitment to family medicine in their own statements, Sierra Leone and South Africa.
