Family Medicine is the division responsible for the holistic medical care of individuals within the context of their families and the community. The division of Family Medicine and Primary Care puts emphasis on a patient-centred approach to primary care in its teaching, based on a firm foundation of biomedical science and clinical skills. The research activities of the division focus on the development of quality primary care within a district health system, and to develop innovative teaching methods in the health sciences.

Bob Mash and Christian Lokotola along with colleagues from the Climate Action Accelerator (Trish Schwerdtle and Kiran Jobanputra) have published an article in the South African Health Review on how to improve the climate resilience and environmental sustainability of your health facility. The theme of the 2026 edition is on “learning health systems: from knowledge to action” and this article is in the section on “learning for emerging priorities”. Nammi Kandula from Northwestern University in Chicago visited us this week. We were busy training facilitators from the Overberg to deliver GREAT for diabetes. The training was happening at the Mthimkhulu Community Centre in Kleinmond and so we also popped in to see Hoffie Conradie and show Nammi what a rural clinic looks like. Training was led by Darcelle Schouw and Mariaan von Pressentin

Members of the South African Academy of Family Physicians - SAAFP research committee (Bob Mash, Febi Ajudua, Mergan Naidoo, Klaus von Pressentin) have just published a national evaluation of the family medicine intern rotation in South Africa. While showing that the rotation meets most of the intended outcomes it also points towards aspects that can be improved and strengthened. Day 2 at Houw Hoek! 🌿
Day 2 of our Strategic Planning & Capacity Building gathering began with breakfast and a full programme ahead of us.
This morning we’re looking at the SU and UCT Family Physician Research Network. We’ll get an update on the current study and select our priority research questions. After tea, the focus turns to preparing Postgraduate Family Medicine for the next five years.
This afternoon we bring it all together. Our café hosts will share refined inputs from the five stations (Undergraduate Education, Postgraduate Education, Research, Strategic Partners & Networks, and Sustainability & Organisation) as we consolidate our strategic plans and goals.
Thank you to everyone who has contributed so many ideas, honest conversations and good energy over these two days. Forward together! 💛

Colleagues from across the Division have come together to shape our priorities and goals for the year ahead. Today’s sessions cover strategic planning, the Distributed Apprenticeship and transformation, with plenty of time to connect and share ideas.

Around 5,075 family doctors are currently reported across 24 countries in the WHO African Region. By 2035, approximately 49,000 may be needed across the Region's 47 countries.

That gap gives some idea of the scale of the challenge discussed by Prof James Avoka Asamani (WHO AFRO Health Workforce Team Lead) at the WONCA Africa Regional Conference.

But his message was not simply that Africa needs to train more family doctors.

Meeting this need requires deliberate decisions about education, employment and deployment.

Training needs to reflect population health needs and the full continuum of care. Expansion needs to be connected to funded posts, clear career pathways and retention. And family doctors need medicines, diagnostics, infrastructure, referral systems and strong multidisciplinary teams around them if they are to deliver effective care.

There is an important role here for governments, universities and health systems, but also for organisations such as WONCA - supporting education and standards, strengthening family medicine research and bringing together experience from across countries and regions.

It is a conversation that will continue as we look ahead to WONCA World Conference 2027 in Cape Town, South Africa.

Bob Mash, Darcelle Schouw and 42 others from Stellenbosch University attended a 3 day collaboration meeting with Northwestern University in Chicago. One of the working groups is on global primary care and we already have five funded projects on diabetes, family physician training in Africa, ultrasound by midwives, and healthy ageing. We hope the meeting will lead to new collaborations in the near future!
