🧬 Breast Cancer and the Family Tree🌳

Does breast cancer run in families? And what can our family history tell us about our own risk?

Last Friday, we were joined by Ms Malebo Malope and Ms Zandi Goliath from the Genetic Counselling Team for another insightful session in our Spotlight Talk Series! 💕

Together, we explored the role of genetics in breast cancer, the importance of understanding our family histories, and how genetic counselling can help individuals and families navigate questions about inherited cancer risk.

🔎 One important takeaway? While most breast cancers are not caused by an inherited genetic predisposition, recognising patterns in our family history can help identify individuals who may benefit from genetic counselling and further risk assessment.

A huge thank you to Malebo and Zandi for sharing their expertise and how understanding our family tree can help us make more informed decisions about our health. 🎀🌷

👟Four Wednesdays. Countless steps. One shared purpose. 💕

Today, we laced up our sneakers and took to the streets of Tygerberg Campus for our fourth and final of 🥹🎀

Throughout October, our BMRI community has come together every Wednesday to walk in solidarity with those affected by breast cancer, reminding us that raising awareness doesn't always require grand gestures. Sometimes, it starts with simply showing up and taking a few steps together. 🩷

From sunny strolls to our rainy-day indoor adventure, each walk has been a celebration of community, connection and a shared commitment to making a difference! 🌸

A heartfelt THANK YOU to everyone who joined us along the way, brought a colleague, wore a little pink or cheered us on. You've helped make our pink walks such a special part of BCAI 2026! 💕

🧁🎀 Baking a difference, one sweet treat at a time! 🩷

A little throwback to our BCAI 2026 Bake Sales, where delicious treats, generous hearts and a whole lot of pink came together for a wonderful cause! 🧁🍪💕

From our incredible volunteer bakers who generously donated their time and talents, to everyone who stopped by to support our sales (and satisfy their sweet tooth!), THANK YOU for helping us turn something as simple as a bake sale into something truly meaningful. 🥹🩷

And the sweetest news of all? ✨
💗 Together, we've raised approximately R14,000 across our fundraising initiatives! 💗

That's R14,000 towards supporting the incredible work of Project Flamingo🦩, an organisation dedicated to improving access to breast cancer treatment and providing compassionate support to patients in South Africa.

Every cupcake purchased, raffle ticket sold and donation made has brought us closer to making a difference in the lives of those affected by breast cancer.

As we approach the end of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we're reminded that small acts of kindness, when brought together, can make a BIG impact. 🎀

Thank you for helping us turn the BMRI pink this October! 🩷

👩🏽‍⚕️ The right procedure. The right time. The individual approach. 💕

Breast cancer surgery has come a long way, and last Friday, Prof Karin Baatjes and Dr Ilna Conradie took us on a fascinating journey through its evolution! 🩺✨

From radical procedures of the past to today's personalised, evidence-based approaches, their Spotlight Talk, , reminded us that breast cancer care is never one-size-fits-all.

Beyond the operating theatre, these two incredible surgeons also share a commitment to giving back. Not only do they perform surgery together, but both volunteer their expertise with Project Flamingo🦩, helping improve access to timely breast cancer care.

A heartfelt thank you to Prof Baatjes and Dr Conradie for sharing their knowledge, compassion and dedication to patient-centred care during ! 💕

Because every patient deserves care that is as individual as they are. 🎀

💬 Language matters in cancer care👩🏽‍⚕️

Last Friday, we had the pleasure of welcoming Dr Hannah Gadama for the second instalment of our BCAI Spotlight Talk Series, where she shared her insightful work on Cancer Care Terminology in African Languages.

Her talk reminded us that effective healthcare communication goes beyond medical terminology. Language plays an important role in making cancer information more accessible, inclusive and meaningful to the communities we serve. 🌍

A heartfelt thank you to Dr Simba for sharing her knowledge and perspectives with us, and to everyone who joined us for another thought-provoking conversation!
