Beyond Declarations: ASSAf Webinar Highlights Urgent Need for Accountability, Survivor Protection and Evidence-Based Action on GBVF

Recognising gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF) as a national crisis must translate into sustained, coordinated and measurable action that strengthens institutions, protects survivors and prevents violence. This was a central message emerging from the first webinar in the Academy of Science of South Africa's (ASSAf) GBVF Webinar Series, held on 15 October 2026 under the theme From Declaration to Action: What Does a National GBVF Disaster Response Require? The webinar brought together researchers and civil society representatives to examine what is needed to move beyond national declarations towards meaningful and sustained action.

🔓 OPEN ACCESS IN AFRICA: WHO CAN AFFORD TO PUBLISH?
Open Access makes research freely available to readers. But what about the costs faced by researchers?
📊 A new study by the Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf), drawing on 761 valid survey responses from researchers across Africa, reveals:
🔹 69.9% had published in journals charging Article Processing Charges (APCs) in the previous five years.
🔹 55.6% identified publication costs as an important factor when choosing a journal.
🔹 62.9% expressed concern about rising APCs.
🔹 44% had published in a Diamond Open Access journal, where neither authors nor readers pay fees.
💎 Diamond Open Access offers an important alternative, but greater visibility, sustainable funding and recognition are essential.
As we mark 2026, the question is not simply whether research is open, but who can afford to publish it.
