For our last guest lecture sessions for the year, between PR and the arts desk, there’s a whole world of words. 🎨 Candice Jantjies joined our Stellenbosch journalism class to talk copywriting, sub-editing, arts journalism and finding your voice.

Sherlin Barends, KFM radio presenter returned back to her alma mater sharing words of encouragement and support to the BA Hons Journalism students who prepare to embark on the journeys in the industry.

Yesterday, Guinness World Record holder Keith Boyd kicked off our guest speaker day speaking to our Journalism students at. He ran the 301-day journey to raise funds for Rainbow Leaders, an organisation that educates young people and encourages them to vote, and he has written a book about the experience. With elections on the horizon, it was a timely conversation.

Thereafter, Financial Mail journalist Antoinette Steyn joined us to talk about breaking down business, governance and the JSE into stories that matter to everyday life, including her column, SENS Insights.

5FM’s Aaron Masemola joined our Stellenbosch journalism class to talk about producing, creative programming and engaging young listeners.

To end off the day, sport on screen and on air 📺🎙️ SuperSport and Good Hope FM’s Cato Louw joined our Stellenbosch journalism class to talk sportscasting across platforms.

Ever wondered how a book goes from the shelf to hands? 📖 Helené Coetzee, Children’s Publicist at Pan Macmillan SA, spoke to our Journalism students at Stellenbosch University about her work in local publishing, from publicity and events to getting more South Africans reading. It was a real look at the people behind the pages.

Carlo Petersen, journalist at Eyewitness News, shared with our Stellenbosch Journalism students the practicalities of the court beat, from where to find case information to the etiquette that earns trust in the courtroom.

“Every story had a loved one before they became a story”

A take away from Carl Thomas’s talk for the BAHons 2026 class yesterday. He is a general journalist at Netwerk 24. His niche focuses on shedding light on the personal stories of those who passed on. Facts matter, but so do the families reading them. Sensitivity has to come first when we report on someone’s loved ones, and we carry that into every interview we do.
