The 2026 Data School Hackathon has officially come to a close, marking the end of an inspiring and memorable experience!

Students from across Stellenbosch University came together to tackle a real-world challenge, bringing creativity, data-driven thinking, teamwork and innovative AI-enabled solutions to the table.

A sincere thank you to Standard Bank - South Africa , our judges, organisers, mentors and everyone who contributed to making the Hackathon a success.

In her professorial inaugural lecture, Prof Elizabeth M. Streicher explores how advances in molecular epidemiology have transformed our understanding of TB, from early strain fingerprinting to whole genome sequencing, in the Western Cape
Drawing on decades of research, she will reveal how genomic data can uncover transmission networks, resistance pathways and successful Mycobacterium tuberculosis lineages offering new possibilities for more targeted, genomic-informed TB control.

The programme will help participants validate their offering, better understand customer needs and build a stronger plan for taking their technology to market.

South Africa marks its 32nd Casual Day this Friday, 4 September, under the national theme Beat As One: Rhythm Matters. At SU, that single Friday has been stretched across all of September, on the logic that an inclusive campus is something everybody has to help build. 🐿️

On the programme:
🥁 The Beat As One drumming session, and why rhythm is the anchor of this year's campaign
🚶 An inclusive campus tour that walks you through the barriers students with disabilities navigate every day
🎬 A documentary screening, a roundtable discussion and a disability inclusion quiz

The Sunskill Surgical Skills Training Centre at Stellenbosch University (SU) recently celebrated 10 years of excellence in surgical education while marking a significant new chapter in its development with the launch of robotic-assisted surgery training.

Located within SU's Biomedical Research Institute (BMRI) in Cape Town, Sunskill is one of Africa's leading surgical training and education facilities. Since opening its doors in 2016, the Centre has supported the professional development of more than 10 000 healthcare professionals, providing access to advanced medical education, innovative technologies and expert-led clinical skills development.

𝗙𝗼𝗿 𝗗𝗿 𝗧𝗮𝗿𝗮 𝗦𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆, 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗻𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗯𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮𝘀𝗲𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗹𝘀. 𝗜𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗮𝗻 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗹𝘆 𝘂𝗻𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲.

Her journey from SU researcher to founder and CEO of TerraClim began with a PhD focused on climate change in the wine industry. Today, this SU spinout helps farmers use climate, terrain and crop-specific data to make more informed decisions.

For Southey, turning research into something that can make a difference on the ground is what makes the journey worthwhile.

Her advice to women entering science, agriculture or entrepreneurship? Trust yourself, build relationships and “don’t be distracted by people’s opinions of you”.

- Lt Dipuo Moilwa

“Even if it’s hard, you must push through.”
Those were Lt Dipuo Moilwa’s words to herself as she struggled through a military endurance march carrying a 25 kg rucksack.

More than 15 years later, that same determination has taken her from the South African National Defence Force to the lecture halls of Stellenbosch University’s Faculty of Military Science, where she is studying Security and Africa Studies.
But Moilwa has come to understand that leadership isn't only about enduring hardship yourself. It is also about recognising the challenges others face – and doing something about them.

Today, alongside her military career, studies and role as a parent, she leads the Military Academy’s Masiza Community Outreach, serving communities through initiatives ranging from supporting schools and old-age homes to establishing community gardens.

“Wherever I go next, I want to carry that ethos with me and continue to make a difference, even if it’s simply by helping one person at a time.”
