Walk-together-express service available during the assessment period

It’s assessment time, and Campus Security has added an additional walk-with service over the next few weeks to help students get to their destinations safely.

The walk-together-express service will be available in the evenings throughout the assessment period, every hour, from 18:00 onwards.

Students can meet at the security kiosk outside the Jan Mouton Building, where a security staff member will accompany groups to various destinations.

The routes include Goldfields, Lobelia, Engineering, Huis Russel Botman, Drie Susters and Monica residence.

Please note: This service does not replace the normal walk-with service. You can still request the usual service via WhatsApp on 082 808 2333.

Last week (12–13 October), the 8th Social Justice Summit, hosted by the Stellenbosch University Centre for Social Justice under the directorship of Prof Thuli Madonsela, brought together hundreds of delegates to tackle pressing issues of service delivery, poverty, social justice and inequality ahead of the 2026 Local Government Elections.

Speaking on behalf of Deputy President Paul Mashatile, Dr Masemola highlighted that the review of the 1998 White Paper on Local Government comes at a critical moment. As South Africa enters the seventh administration of democratic local government, the focus is firmly on strengthening the developmental role of municipalities.

The summit underscored the shift from aspiration to action. Highlights included a Youth Roundtable co-chaired by SU Faculty of Law Social Justice Ambassadors Okuhle Qasana and Liam Gillesen, a keynote address by Public Protector Advocate Kholeka Gcaleka, and a Gala Dinner on Day 1 featuring Justice Albie Sachs.

In a few days, the Stellenbosch University Centre for Social Justice will host the 8th Annual Social Justice Summit.

Taking place on 12 and 13 October 2026 at the Coetzenburg Centre, the Summit has become South Africa’s foremost multi-stakeholder platform for translating constitutional commitments on social justice into concrete policy and law reform outcomes. The 2026 Summit, themed “The District Development Model / Inter-governmental Relations as catalysts for achieving SDGs and Social Justice,” convenes at a pivotal national and global juncture: with local government elections imminent, the 2030 SDG deadline approaching, and the country taking stock of thirty years of constitutional democracy, under a constitution that recognises local government in its own right amid persisting challenges of apartheid mirroring structural inequality, poverty and food insecurity and periodic unrests.

Stellenbosch University’s Faculty of Law is proud to host the International Association of Law Schools Annual Meeting and Conference from 3 to 4 September, at the Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Study (STIAS).
This prestigious event brings together over 80 delegates and global legal leaders representing more than 60 universities across 23 countries to address critical challenges in legal education, such as artificial intelligence, deglobalization, erosion, and the Rule of Law.

The opening session featured a welcome address by Stellenbosch University Rector and Vice-Chancellor Professor Deresh Ramjugernath, alongside key insights from IALS leadership and a keynote address by retired South African Constitutional Court Justice Richard Goldstone.

In his address, Professor Deresh Ramjugernath highlighted the vital role of legal research – particularly in South Africa where the Rule of Law was contested under the apartheid government. His address emphasises the ongoing global need to protect human rights, dignity, equality, and access to education.

Calling on our legal recruitment partners!

The Faculty of Law is in the midst of a research project to better understand how our law students integrate into the working world, post-graduation, and the experiences of external stakeholders who work with them, including legal recruiters, candidate attorney programmes, and practitioners involved in recruiting our graduates.

If you are involved in recruiting Stellenbosch University law students, whether through vacation work, candidate attorney or pupillage programmes, internships, or graduate recruitment more broadly, we would value your perspective.

We’re inviting interested recruiters and practitioners to take part. This involves a short online questionnaire, plus an optional one-on-one online meeting with our colleagues at M&ESure, who are leading the qualitative research for this project.

If you would like to take part, please either send an email to [email protected], or send us a message on LinkedIn (https://lnkd.in/dkDc2Zrg).

Your insights will help us strengthen the way we prepare our students for legal practice.

The South African Law Deans’ Association (SALDA) is currently convening at Stellenbosch University’s Faculty of Law, bringing together academic leadership from across the country. SALDA acknowledges the leadership of the outgoing President and Vice-President, Prof Mzukisi Njotini (Dean, Faculty of Law, University of Fort Hare) and Prof Jacques de Ville (Dean, Faculty of Law, UWC).

At this meeting, a new leadership team was elected: Dr Lynn Biggs (Dean, Faculty of Law, Nelson Mandela University) as President and Prof Mpfariseni Budeli-Nemakonde (Dean, Faculty of Law, UNISA) as Vice-President. SALDA is committed to developing and maintaining excellence, driving transformation, and strengthening collaboration across legal research and training. Part of this mandate includes partnering with professional bodies, like the Legal Practice Council, on initiatives such as LLB reviews and curricula. The association convenes biannually, rotating its meetings across South African law faculties.

This meeting sets the stage for the general meeting and conference of the International Association of Law Schools (IALS) taking place on 3–4 September 2026 at the Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Studies (STIAS). This is the first time the IALS general meeting will be taking place in South Africa.
