The Innovus Translational Fellows Programme (TFP) at Stellenbosch University offers recent or soon-to-be master’s and PhD graduates the opportunity to turn their research innovations into products or services that can make a difference in society.

💰 Financial exclusion and student support – Tackling financial barriers to registration and studying.

🏠 Student accommodation – Addressing access to affordable and suitable housing.

🧡 Gender-based violence – Strengthening survivor support, prevention and institutional accountability.

🍽️ Food insecurity – Helping ensure students have access to adequate, nutritious food.

🌟 Reaching for the stars – and helping others do the same!

What does it really mean to reach for the stars? For Stellenbosch University (SU) alumna Sinesipo Sibuta, it's not just about achieving your own dreams, but helping others realise theirs too.

🏆 On 8 October, SU celebrated outstanding student achievements at the 2026 Rector's Awards for Excellent Achievement, presenting 79 awards in recognition of academic excellence, resilience, leadership, culture, social impact and sport.

Among those honoured was Sinesipo, who received the prestigious SRC Award for Exceptional Achievement. From growing up in Kayamandi and becoming the first graduate in her family to building an international career and co-founding the Help A Girl Campaign, her journey is one of determination, courage and creating opportunities for others.

💬 "Reaching for the stars for me means that if I'm lucky enough to grab one, I have the responsibility to hold it up so that it can shine for everyone around me, because they might just realise that they too can reach [for it]."

🏆🚀 153 expressions of interest. 8 finalists. 3 winners. ONE incredible IDEA SMASH journey!

After kicking off on 20 July, SU's inaugural IDEA SMASH™ - The Co-Creation Edition has officially crowned its champions! 🎉

On 5 October, eight student innovators pitched their big ideas to a judging panel comprising Prof Liezl van Dyk, Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Academic at SU; Prof Kanshukan Rajaratnam, Chief Academic Director: School of Data Science and Computational Thinking at SU; Amohetsoe Shale, Founder and CEO of NAVU.

And now we have our winners.

👏 Huge congratulations to our winners and every student who took on the challenge!

Hosted by the Listen, Live and Learn (LLL) Programme and the Postgraduate Network (PGN) in the Centre for Student Life and Learning of the Office of the Dean of Students, IDEA SMASH gave students opportunities to develop skills in creative problem-solving, entrepreneurship, teamwork, leadership, digital innovation and AI, while learning how to turn real-world challenges into practical solutions.

🌍 And the journey doesn't stop here!

The three winners and other participants with promising ideas will now receive further support to develop their concepts into businesses, connect with industry partners or turn their innovations into practical solutions that address challenges in communities.

What do these terms mean, how do they affect our communities, and what can we do to build a more inclusive society?

All Stellenbosch University students and staff are invited to join an open and thought-provoking dialogue on Confronting Afrophobia or Xenophobia? at Tygerberg campus.
