How do we understand Coloured identity in South Africa, and what does it mean to build a collective understanding of a complex and evolving identity?

Stellenbosch University staff and students are invited to join the Office of the Manager: Student Affairs at Tygerberg campus for their second dialogue on Exploring and Untangling Coloured Identity Towards a Shared Future.

What does it take to create a welcome that helps a newcomer feel that they truly belong? 💚

On Saturday, newly elected student leaders from across Stellenbosch University came together for the Constitutional Welcoming Training, offered by the Centre for Student Life and Learning at Student Affairs,preparing them for the important role they will play in welcoming a new generation of students to our University.

Through discussions, knowledge sharing and reflection, the leaders explored topics including understanding their community structures, how clusters function and their goals, and what SU has learned from Welcoming 2026 that can help shape future community welcoming programmes.

Leaders also reflected on an important question: What do newcomer students really need to know when they arrive at university? Through conversations on values-driven orientations, shared experiences and practical learning, they considered how every interaction, activity and conversation can contribute to helping a newcomer feel seen, valued and part of a community.

As our student leaders begin preparing for the next Welcoming Programme, they do so with new ideas, shared insights and a clearer understanding of the important role they can play in creating communities where students can connect, belong and thrive. ✨

The impact of a Residence Head doesn’t stop at the residence door. 🏘

When we think about Residence Heads, we often think about the communities they build, the students they mentor, and the sense of belonging they cultivate within our residences. But their impact also extends far beyond residence life.

👏🏼🥳👏🏽🥳👏🏾 Congratulations to Delecia Davids, Residence Head of Harmonie Ladies Residence and lecturer in the Faculty of Education, on becoming the first South African academic to receive the prestigious Einstein Fellowship award.

Delecia’s achievement reminds us of something important about residence leadership: Residence Heads bring their expertise, research, creativity and passion for student development into our living-learning communities. And in return, those communities become spaces where ideas are tested, relationships are built, and leadership is shaped.

Behind much of our work is research, reflection and the knowledge gained from working closely with students.
There are lots of afternoons and evenings filled with reflection and conversation, and the sharing of experiences, insights and knowledge that inform how we understand and respond to students’ needs, much like our August Soup and Bread Research conversations.
We know that valuable knowledge is generated not only through formal research, but also through the everyday experiences of colleagues working alongside students. And that’s what we try to do – take practice, theory, data, and experience to help us create offerings that speak to students. 📚💡

If you do, you still have some time to sign up and attend the Centre for Student Counselling and Development's Ctrl+Alt+Reset life skills workshop series today.

The workshops are presented by Occupational Therapy (OT) interns from Stellenbosch University's Tygerberg campus every Monday from 13:10 to 13:50 at the CSCD offices, 37 Victoria Street, and are open to all SU students.

Today's workshop focuses on tips to improve your sleep and how to fuel your brain with the right food for academic success. While you're at it, make sure to diarise next week's workshop that will help you implement everything shared over the month-long series.

At its heart, Ground Up is about one thing - helping students help themselves.

Started by students from 65 Victoria Street House, one of SU’s Listen, Live and Learn (LLL) communities, Ground Up’s goal is to help entrepreneurial-minded students with incredible ideas, businesses, skills and products get exposure, access networks, mentorship and investment opportunities, customers and people who can help take an idea to the next level.

Last week’s three-day Career Fair presented by the Unit for Graduand Career Services at Stellenbosch University was a huge success! We caught up with some of our future CAs, accountants and finance leaders on day three of the fair as they came out in full force to network and ask some important questions to ensure they are one step closer to one day acquiring SAICA, SAIPA and CIMA registration. 📊✨

For SU’s Dean of Students, Dr Leslie van Rooi, it starts with listening to students, understanding their challenges and creating the conditions for them to thrive.

From making funds available to support students with registration, to paying allowances to qualifying students for food and accommodation, SU has put measures in place to help students navigate some of the challenges they face.

But support isn't only financial. Van Rooi also highlights something we can all underestimate: time to pause, connect with friends, get some fresh air and simply be. Because wellbeing matters too. 💛
