This Master Class will look at the relationship between Master’s and PhD researchers and their supervisors and how to make it work well throughout the research journey.

In this session, we will discuss setting expectations, communicating effectively, making supervisory meetings useful, and responding constructively to feedback. We will also explore how to handle disagreements or difficult situations and when to seek additional support.

𝐀 𝐬𝐮𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐟𝐮𝐥 𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐧 𝐚𝐜𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐜 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩

From 24 to 28 August 2026, the African Doctoral Academy at Stellenbosch University, in collaboration with the Centre for Innovation in Learning and Teaching at the Central University of Technology, presented a short course on 𝐀𝐜𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐜 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐆𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐇𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐄𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: 𝐃𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐮𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐧 𝐑𝐞𝐟𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 in Bloemfontein.

The five-day short course introduced key leadership theories and practices while drawing on participants’ professional experience and the collective expertise of the group.

Across eight dialogues, participants explored leadership at the individual, interpersonal and institutional levels. Dialogues ranged from self-awareness and emotional intelligence to team development, academic governance and leadership within an academic department.

The course encouraged participants to reflect critically on their leadership approaches and identify practical opportunities for continued development. This work culminated in the preparation of a Personal Leadership Development Plan.

We thank Mr Schalk van der Merwe for facilitating the course. We also thank our colleagues at the Central University of Technology for their valued collaboration and support.

Our sincere appreciation goes to the participants for their active engagement and for sharing their knowledge and experience throughout the programme.

Designed for master’s and doctoral students and early-stage researchers, this course explores how AI can be used critically, ethically and productively throughout the research process. 𝗔𝗗𝗔 𝗪𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 | 𝗖𝗮𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻

Over the past three weeks, from 29 June to 17 July 2026, the African Doctoral Academy (ADA) Winter School brought together doctoral candidates, researchers and academics from across Africa and beyond for an intensive programme of learning, engagement and scholarly development.

Delivered in both online and in-person formats, delegates participated in courses covering quantitative and qualitative research methods, higher education teaching and learning, academic writing and publishing, entrepreneurship, mixed methods research, and the evolving role of AI in academia.

This year’s programme also included valuable collaborations with PERIPERI U at Stellenbosch University and the Cape Higher Education Consortium (CHEC), further strengthening our shared commitment to research capacity development across the continent.

𝗧𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗸 𝘆𝗼𝘂 to all our delegates, both online and in person, for your enthusiasm, active participation and commitment throughout the three weeks. Your engagement and willingness to learn made this Winter School a truly enriching experience.
