On 22 October 2026, Stellenbosch University International welcomed a delegation from the University of Namibia (UNAM) to Stellenbosch University, following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the two institutions in July.

The visit provided an opportunity for the delegation to engage with colleagues across SU and learn more about the university’s work in student support, health and wellbeing, and sport.

Through discussions with representatives from Campus Health Services, the Centre for Student Counselling and Development, and Maties Sport: The Centre for Sports Leadership, the conversations explored different approaches to student development and support, as well as sport science, biokinetics and high-performance sport.

Beyond sharing experiences and institutional practices, visits like these help build relationships, open doors to new ideas and create opportunities for collaboration between African universities.

Hosted on 15 October 2026, the African Gala Evening is one of Stellenbosch University International’s flagship annual events, bringing the university community together to celebrate Africa’s rich cultural heritage, diversity and shared identity.

The initiative is driven by AMANI, the student-led African Student Board, and coordinated by the Unit for Global Learning, creating a platform for African students to share their experiences, celebrate their identities and strengthen their sense of belonging at Stellenbosch University.

A highlight of the evening was the keynote address by Ambassador Ebrahim Rasool, who reflected on Africa’s history, resilience and future. His address encouraged students to engage critically with the continent’s journey, take pride in their heritage and recognise their role in shaping Africa’s future.
The programme also featured a student panel discussion on African identity, solidarity and unity in diversity, offering perspectives on what it means to belong to a diverse yet interconnected African community.

At the heart of the event is AMANI’s role in amplifying student voices, fostering connection and creating opportunities for African students to engage with questions of identity, belonging and shared purpose. Through this student-led initiative, SU International continues to advance meaningful intercultural exchange and strengthen a university community rooted in African perspectives and global engagement.

The African Gala Evening is more than a celebration of culture; it is an opportunity to reflect on the connections that unite us and the collective role of Africa’s next generation in shaping the continent’s future.

A joint team from Northwestern University and Stellenbosch University won this year’s Intramural Global Health Case Competition, held on September 29 at the Norris University Center on the Evanston Campus.

It was the first time since the competition launched in 2014 that it included students from outside Northwestern. Because it took place during the SU/NU Global Health Knowledge Hub Conference, which brought 44 researchers, students and administrators from South Africa to Northwestern to expand and explore research collaborations, students from Stellenbosch University could join their Northwestern peers.

Teams received a global health case and were given one week to develop a solution, which they presented in 12-minute presentations to a panel of faculty judges. This year’s case was set in Bolivia, where the Indigenous population faces high rates of maternal mortality.

Marking the 2026 China-Africa People-to-People and Cultural Exchange Year, the Confucius Institute (CI) at Stellenbosch University held its “2026 Teaching Review Meeting and Mid-Autumn Festival Celebration”.

The festival programme featured three themed zones: a Chinese food experience zone, a photo exhibition for the China-Africa People-to-People and Cultural Exchange Year, and an interactive Bo Bing dice game zone. Guests sampled mooncakes handmade by the Institute’s Chinese language teachers, a spread of Chinese dishes, and Chinese tea brewed and served by the teachers. They also learned about the outcomes of 2026 South Africa-China people-to-people exchanges as well as the CI’s educational and cultural initiatives through the photo display.

It’s , and today we’re highlighting another story! 🌍✈️

We’re spotlighting Zainab Kashim-Bello, an SU PhD Candidate in the field of Molecular Biology. In March 2026, Zainab travelled to Venice International University in Italy for a Spring School.

"I attended the Equipping Researchers with Skills, Strategies and Confidence for Science Communication course at the Venice International University (VIU) Spring School on San Servolo Island, Italy, in March 2026. As a PhD researcher, I found the course extremely valuable, as it provided practical tools and strategies for communicating scientific research clearly and effectively to both academic and public audiences. I particularly appreciated the interactive activities, which enhanced my confidence in presenting my work, engaging with diverse audiences, and demonstrating the broader impact of my research.

Beyond the academic learning, the cultural experiences in Venice were equally memorable, including visits to historic museums, exploration of the iconic canals, and the renowned Murano glass workshops. These experiences enriched the programme and complemented the learning journey. I would highly recommend this course to researchers seeking to strengthen their science communication skills and broaden their professional development."
