The application deadline for the Future17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Challenge has been extended to 14 September 2026!

Taking place from 28 September to 11 December 2026,
Future17 brings together students from universities around the world to tackle challenges linked to the United Nations' 17 SDGs โ€” working with real industry, NGO and institutional partners.

Over 8 weeks, you will:

- Collaborate with students from different countries, cultures and disciplines

- Apply Design Thinking to develop innovative, practical solutions

- Strengthen your critical thinking and problem-solving skills

- Work with an industry/organisation partner and academic mentors

- Develop professional presentation, communication and teamwork skills

- Explore how your academic knowledge can create real-world impact

Meet Fiammetta Remotti, an international exchange student who made the leap from Italy to Stellenbosch University (SU) for her semester abroad. In her story, she reflects on her academic journey, building global connections, and experiencing life at SU.

"I donโ€™t think I will ever be able to erase from my mind the warm light that surrounded the mountains along the road on the morning I arrived in South Africa. I landed in Cape Town at around six oโ€™clock in the morning, just as the sun was beginning to light up the landscape and slowly outline the mountains and around me. It was precisely at that moment, gazing at the view through the window, that I realized I was truly on the other side of the world, in a place that would become my home for the next five months. Even before stepping onto the campus, I felt immediately and warmly welcomed by Stellenbosch University."

SU students can gain international academic experience without leaving home through the Tรœ-VIP (Tรผbingen Virtual Intercultural Program) offered by the University of Tรผbingen in Germany.

This tuition-free, 10-week online initiative allows participants to enroll in interactive, real-time courses covering topics such as sustainability, politics, human rights, intercultural communication, and language studies (including German). Running across two main intakes each year, February to April and October to December, the programme features an integrated online buddy system to foster global connections and earns transferable ECTS credits.

For Dr Gugu Gama, internationalisation isnโ€™t about chasing validation from elsewhere in the world. Itโ€™s about looking across Africa itself and finding the potential thatโ€™s already there.

As Coordinator of the CERI Africa STARS Fellowship Programme at the Centre for Collaboration in Africa (CCA) at Stellenbosch University International (SUI), Gugu spends her days pushing for something quietly radical: research partnerships that stay on the continent. She connects young African scientists across borders, disciplines and cultures, working toward a network where Africans themselves decide what gets researched, what counts as a priority, and what solutions actually fits the continentโ€™s realities.

On 21 August 2025, Stellenbosch University (SU), in partnership with the Consulate General of India in Cape Town (India in South Africa (Consulate General of India, Capetown), hosted the โ€œExploring India-South Africa Start-up Ecosystemโ€ for a day that brought entrepreneurs, innovators, academics, and students from both countries together to talk collaboration and growth in the global start-up space.

The proceedings opened with remarks from SU Rector Prof. Deresh Ramjugernath, High Commissioner of India to the Republic of South Africa Shri Prabhat Kumar, and Consul General Ms. Ruby Jaspreet, each speaking to the role universities play in driving innovation across borders.

The programme featured Mr Sahil Affriya (Founder & CEO, Shiprazor) and Mr Aman Singh (Founder, The Venture Studio), who shared honest reflections from their entrepreneurial journeys. Prof Willem Fourie, Director of SU's Policy Innovation Lab, then led a Q&A with SU alumnus Mr Retief Louw, Founder of Cape Codes, digging into the practical realities of scaling an early-stage venture.

Weโ€™re spotlighting Nico Martin, an SU student currently pursuing his Master's in Electronic Engineering. From January to April 2026, Nico travelled to KU Leuven University in Belgium for a research exchange

"I spent my time at the MECO (Motion Estimation Control and Optimization) research lab in Leuven on a research exchange for my Master's. Here, I had the opportunity to learn from experienced researchers in my domain. During my stay, I had the chance to experience some of Belgiumโ€™s renowned food. I often enjoyed the classic Fritjes with mayonnaise, learnt the difference between a Liรจge waffle and a Brussels waffle, and discovered why Belgian pralines are so expensive. Exploring the surrounding towns taught me how to navigate a European countryโ€™s public transport system, from trains to buses, despite a few hiccups along the way. I. I embraced the city's main form of transport, the bicycle, which became my mode of transport to my studies, even on those cold winter mornings"
