MatiesLead 2026 Phase 2 IS HERE!

Congratulations on your election as a MatiesLeader! In May, we launched MatiesLead 2026 with Phase 1, designed for aspiring leaders, with the theme Building a Campus to Build a Nation.

From 4–6 September, more than 1,400 newly elected student leaders from across leadership structures will gather for a weekend of leadership development and shared learning, exploring belonging, civic impact, ethics, operational resilience, and student voice.

As we Grow. Rise. Lead together, you will connect with other leaders from across the University, work through real leadership challenges, peer-to-peer, and foster relationships that will enrich your leadership journey.

Building a Campus to Build a Nation”, positions MatiesLead 2026 positions student leadership as a lived practice grounded in purpose, inclusion, ethics, and empowerment beyond the classroom.

Through keynote inputs, panel discussions, and practical breakaway sessions, you will gain insight into how leadership is practiced at Stellenbosch University – and the significance of your role in creating an inclusive student community.

SELECTING YOUR BREAKAWAYS

We have a wide range of breakaway sessions for you to attend. When registering using the Registration Form, please ensure to select 1 session for each of the 6 breakaway opportunities. You should have attended 6 breakaway sessions by the end of MatiesLead Phase 2; 3 on Saturday, 3 on Sunday.

On 9 August 1956, thousands of women marched to the Union Buildings in Pretoria to protest the extension of apartheid pass laws to Black women.

The laws restricted their movement, broke up families, and subjected them to arrest.

Their protest elevated women's visibility as leaders in the anti-apartheid struggle, inspired unity, and led to the establishment of National Women's Day on 9 August.

Today we commemorate their leadership.

The 2026 Local Government Elections take place on 4 November 2026, and if you’re not registered, you won’t be able to vote.

This Voter Registration Weekend (1-2 August), check your registration status, register to vote, or update your details if you’ve moved.

Local Government Elections determine who represents your municipality and makes decisions about the services that affect your daily life, including water and sanitation, roads, waste collection, electricity, and local development.

You can always decide who to vote for later, but you must be registered to have that choice.
