Time to develop, time to learn, time to empower! 🤓

Technology is constantly evolving, creating new opportunities to improve teaching and learning.

The Handlab team recently received training from SADiLaR on how to use a Learning Management System (LMS) platform. This is an important step towards making our SASL learning and teaching materials available on a better, more accessible platform for schools for the Deaf.

Our goal is to empower teachers with the resources they need to continue educating Deaf learners and ensure that language is never a barrier to learning. 🤟🏽

Together, we are embracing technology, building skills and creating better opportunities for Deaf learners.

🎬 Behind the scenes at Handlab!

Our team has been working hard behind the scenes on one of our newest resources: SASL Learning Resources!

These materials will support teachers and learners in preparing for assessments, giving them step-by-step CAPS-aligned instructions on how to sign, for example, a summary, different types of essays and different types of transactional texts.

We look forward to having these resources ready by early next year and making them available to schools for the Deaf across South Africa. Stay tuned for more updates!

🌍 World Mental Health Day | 10 October

This year’s theme is “Access and Inclusion: Why Community Mental Health Is Important.”

Deaf people often face communication barriers in a hearing world, which can contribute to stress, frustration and feelings of isolation. Access to mental health support in a language they understand is essential.

From 28–30 September, the Western Cape Education Department hosted the “Unlocking Potential” Conference in Cape Town, bringing together more than 350 teachers, occupational therapists, speech therapists, social workers and other professionals working in inclusive education.

Handlab was there in full force! 🙌🏻 We proudly showcased our LTSM, DCAPS, Schools for Skills and Book Dash projects – but it was our signing that caught attention! 🤟🏽

Claire and Alex proudly represented the Deaf community, sharing insights about Deafness and creating greater awareness and respect for South African Sign Language (SASL).

A powerful way to close Deaf Awareness Month – through visibility, connection and inclusion. 💙🤟🏽
