🚀 The federal government has sent an offer to the European Space Agency (ESA) to send Faculty of Engineering alumna and 2026 Australian of the Year, Katherine Bennell-Pegg, to the International Space Station in a mission slated for 2028. This would be the first time a qualified astronaut has flown to space under the Australian flag.

Celebrating our 2026 Humanitarian Innovation Hackathon winners in Fiji! 🎉

Last week, we celebrated Bula Coders (Team 15C) from the University of the South Pacific at the USP Laucala Campus, where Ammaar Mohammed, Vika Bunoa and Serai Lagilagi were formally presented with their 1st Prize award.

The award was presented by Britt Hendriks, committee member of The Warren Centre Humanitarian Engineering Hub. Joining the celebration were Head of School Professor Bibhya Sharma, university staff, families of the winners and supporters of the Hackathon, making it a particularly meaningful occasion.

Congratulations again to Bula Coders (Team 15C) on this well deserved recognition. It was fantastic to see their hard work and innovation celebrated with the people who supported them along the journey.

What problems could the next generation of STEM leaders solve if given the opportunity?

Last week, more than 70 Western Sydney students from the Khuda Women in STEM Academy presented their innovative solutions to real-world challenges issued by University of Sydney academics, from the use of AI to deter wildlife from roads, to using quantum computing to protect sensitive data.

Supported by the Khuda Family Foundation’s landmark $100 million gift, the program empowers young women to explore STEM through hands-on learning experiences that build confidence, capabilities and pathways into future study and careers.

Receive up to $10k for one year to support your studies in engineering or computer science with the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Sydney (includes combined degrees).

Successful applicants will also benefit from an early conditional offer to an eligible undergraduate degree with a reduced ATAR requirement.

Applications are open to undergraduate domestic female students commencing in 2027.

We're wishing the University of Sydney Rocketry team the best of luck at the 2026 Australian Universities Rocketry Competition (AURC) this week! 🚀

After months of preparation, designing and testing, the team are heading to White Cliffs in regional New South Wales where they'll be put to the test to design, build and launch their own rockets across 5,000, 10,000 and 30,000-foot categories.

The competition, run by the Australian Youth Aerospace Association (AYAA), brings together emerging engineers, industry experts and the national rocketry community in a practical demonstration of the skills, creativity and teamwork required to take a rocket from concept to launch.

The competition will run from Wednesday 30 September to Sunday 4 October.
