Last week, Donald Trump and Xi Jinping engaged in a handshake that lasted for a whopping 14 seconds.

The interaction begged the question - what meaning can be found in a handshake?

Dr Louise Pryke takes a brief look at the complex history of the handshake.

“Follow your passions. Do what you love. If a door opens, don't stand on the threshold, go through it.”

That was Kate McClymont AM’s message to students last week, as the award-winning investigative journalist addressed graduates in the Great Hall after receiving an honorary doctorate from the University.

“As an alumna, Fellow and former Pro-Chancellor, Kate has made a significant contribution to the life of this University. It’s a privilege to recognise her today,” said Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Mark Scott AO.

Have you ever talked about something with a friend… then suddenly seen an ad for it?

Most of us assume our phones are listening. The reality might be stranger.

Companies don’t necessarily need to hear your conversations - they can build surprisingly accurate predictions using search history, clicks, location data, online behaviour, and even patterns from people around you.

Dr Nina Schirrmacher explains why targeted ads feel so creepy, and offers practical steps to protect your privacy.

Were prices really ‘down down’? 🤔

Last week, the Federal Court found that Coles Supermarkets had misled their customers by temporarily increasing prices on some of their products before, placing the same products in their ‘Down Down’ promotion.

The ACCC brought the claim to the Federal Court - and they won. They said Coles’ practices “made it harder for customers to identify genuine value for money”.

Dr Rob Nicholls from the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences says this case shows that ACCC is a strong enforcer when it comes to consumer rights.

“Welcome to Sydney, where your story begins.” ✨

PhD candidate Shila Xu, together with teammates Dr Yi Zhao and Leping Yang, will be bringing a glowing “message in a bottle” to Campbells Cove at Circular Quay for Vivid Sydney 2026.

As lead designer of the project “Dear You”, Shila developed the concept and worked closely with the team to turn the idea into reality. Inspired by Sydney as a place of arrivals, memories and new beginnings, the installation invites people to pause, even just for a moment.

“We hope people stop for a brief moment to read the letter inside the installation… and maybe something shifts — a memory, an emotion.”

At first, it looks like a giant floating heart ❤️

But this artwork is actually about the women erased from a 32-generation family history.

For International Museum Day, we’re highlighting Hearts of Absent Women (Tree of Family) by Ema Shin, on display now at the Chau Chak Wing Museum as part of the Biennale of Sydney 2026.

Using stitched fabric, embroidery and beads, Shin transforms absence into something physical - giving presence and weight to the women left out of the historical record.

From six-hour train commutes to a fully funded PhD at Oxford University 💫

Katie Barton studied data science and veterinary bioscience at the University of Sydney, in what she calls her degree in “coding and cow herding”

As a first in family student, her journey wasn’t without obstacles. Katie balanced part-time work, long commutes from Newcastle, and the pressures of university life - and now she’s heading to Oxford on a fully-funded scholarship.

“Don’t let imposter syndrome or your background limit what you think your future could look like,” she says.

A gigantic congratulations from everyone in the USYD community, Katie.

When determination meets opportunity 🎓 🤝

Diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma in Year 11, Stephen never thought he’d get into law school after missing classes during treatment.
Through the MySydney Program, he got his chance.

Now, as one of the program’s first cohort graduates, Stephen has officially graduated with a law degree.
