Racism in the streets, racism in universities, racism from the state: How do we understand what is happening and keep each other safe?

The Sarah Parker Remond Centre for the Study of Racism and Racialisation is a dedicated centre for the analysis and examination of racism historically and today, both globally and in our everyday lives.

We have witnessed distressing and escalating campaigns of public racism in recent months and years. These events remind us that street racisms and official racisms often go hand in hand.

This event is an opportunity to think together about the formations of racism that we face today and what we can do together to keep each other safe.

Join us in person to discuss the launch of Amit Singh’s new book, Cancelled Futures: Class, Race & Place in Post-Industrial Britain.

Cancelled Futures is a powerful exploration of how young working-class people navigate an era of economic uncertainty. Drawing on interviews with 62 Black, Asian and white young people across Britain, Singh challenges simplistic debates about race versus class and reveals the shared struggles shaping young people’s hopes, ambitions and sense of possibility.

From London to Rochdale and Morecambe Bay, the book examines how race, gender and place influence experiences of inequality, while highlighting a common feeling of living without a clear or secure future. Insightful and deeply humane, Cancelled Futures offers a timely account of dignity, resilience and social change in contemporary Britain.
