🚀 𝗗𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗲 & 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗗𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘂𝗲: 𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘆 & 𝗜𝗻𝗳𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲

On the sidelines of the APEC Finance Ministers’ Meeting held in Hong Kong, China, the Asia Global Institute and the APEC Study Center, Hong Kong, China, co-organized a dialogue focusing on digital trade, digital finance, and digital infrastructure finance—key priorities under the APEC China agenda.

This workshop convened public and private sector finance leaders, researchers, and industry experts from across the APEC region to examine the critical forces shaping the future of global digital trade and financial architecture.

Opening remarks were delivered by Prof. Heiwai Tang - Economic Analysis 鄧希煒經濟分析, Director of the Asia Global Institute.

The first panel, moderated by Asia Global Fellow Jamie Ko, examined strategies to accelerate digital trade integration with insights from Carlos Kuriyama, Director of the APEC Policy Support Unit; Jinchang Lai, Principal Operations Officer at the International Finance Corporation (IFC) / World Bank Group; and Alicia Lee, Chief Operating Officer at Global Shipping Business Network (GSBN).

The second panel shifted the focus to digitalizing finance, bringing together regulatory, academic, and private sector perspectives to examine key developments in fintech adoption, cross-border digital payments, and financial inclusion. The session featured insights from George Chou, Chief Fintech Officer at the Hong Kong Monetary Authority; Prof. Heiwai Tang, Director of the Asia Global Institute; Venetia Lee, CEO of AlipayHK and General Manager at Ant International Greater China; and Asia Global Fellow Calum Handforth.

At the 2026 IMF/World Bank Group Annual Meeting in Bangkok, Professor Heiwai Tang - Economic Analysis 鄧希煒經濟分析 delivered insightful remarks during a panel discussion on navigating turbulent economic times through effective trade diversification and resilient supply chains.

𝙺̲𝚎̲𝚢̲ ̲𝚝̲𝚊̲𝚔̲𝚎̲𝚊̲𝚠̲𝚊̲𝚢̲𝚜̲ ̲𝚒̲𝚗̲𝚌̲𝚕̲𝚞̲𝚍̲𝚎̲:̲
• Pre-2025, the strategy of China + 1 aimed at value creation, has evolved. Currently, countries are shifting away from this approach, instead focusing on hedging, localizing production, and exploring new markets to adapt to changing rules and increased uncertainty.

• Southeast Asia has benefited from these shifts, driven by industrial growth. While prepared through frameworks and trade agreements, infrastructure gaps and regulatory transparency remain challenges.

• Service trade is growing faster than manufacturing, even amid 'de-globalization,' underscoring its vital role in diversification and growth.

• The "Triple A" supply chain—Agility, Adaptability, and Alignment—is crucial. Governments should focus on these principles to build resilience in a volatile environment.

Sebastian Contin Trillo-Figueroa, AsiaGlobal Fellow 2022, and Mohamed Ibrahim Hafez, AsiaGlobal Fellow 2023, wrote in the South China Morning Post that recent joint air exercises between China and Egypt mark a significant shift in Beijing’s global power projection. They argue that after decades of expanding its economic footprint abroad, China is beginning to pair its overseas trade and infrastructure investments with the military reach necessary to safeguard them, while Egypt gains strategic leverage by deepening ties with a major global power.
