Pleased to share our new article in the Journal of Marriage and Family!
Drawing on separate in-depth interviews with 120 participants from 40 three-generation Hong Kong Chinese families, we explore how intergenerational relationships develop across linked lives over the life course.
Our study develops a triadic relational framework showing how family members navigate alignment and misalignment as they recognize, interpret, and respond to one another's changing needs, roles, and expectations.
Solidarity does not require consensus: different perspectives and contributions can be coordinated into meaningful care and support. Ambivalence goes beyond mixed feelings: care remains meaningful but can become difficult to sustain; families contain unresolved tensions by adjusting expectations, setting limits, and communicating selectively. Conflict is more than disagreement: misalignment can intensify when unequal care burdens are recognized but not redistributed, sacrifices go unrecognized, or authority limits adjustment and repair.
Relational grounding and Hong Kong's cultural-structural realities give these negotiations emotional, historical, moral, and practical weight, shaping families' capacity to navigate differences, repair relationships, and sustain family ties over time.
