In the course of its over half a century of service, the Faculty has periodically examined its mission and vision, to be constructively engaged in the community and the world. The Faculty prides itself on the illustrious scholastic tradition it has inherited from the founding educators including Chien Mu, Tang Chun-I, Mou Zhong-san and Mou Run-sun, as well as the unique role it plays in fostering the University's goal of integrating tradition with modernity and bringing together China and the West. 文學院自1963年成立。逾半個世紀以來，文學院適時審視其使命和願景，冀能貢獻社會以至世界。當年多位教育家包括錢穆、唐君毅、牟宗三及牟潤孫創院之初，已奠定了涓涓博雅的中國人文精神。文學院除了傳承先賢的學術英華，並孜孜不懈弘揚中文大學治學與育才的目標：糅合傳統與現代；融和中國與西方。

文學院屬下設有十一個學系，兩個語言中心，提供共十四項主修課程。
文學院基於資源、地利及學術的積澱，不同學術領域的學者及優秀的學生都樂意加入成為學院的一分子，投身教與學，鑽研學術。

✨跨越音樂、律動與文化的創作旅程：認識中大駐校藝術家徐秋雁（Jen Shyu）

我們很高興歡迎實驗聲樂家、作曲家、多樂器演奏家及製作人徐秋雁（Jen Shyu）出任中大2026年駐校藝術家。

徐秋雁的創作源自她一直以來對音樂、身體動作、語言與文化的好奇與探索。她自幼接受芭蕾舞、鋼琴及小提琴的專業訓練，其後於史丹福大學修讀歌劇。她的藝術研究足跡遍及巴西、中國、古巴、東帝汶、印尼、日本及韓國，探索不同地方的傳統音樂與舞蹈。

她的作品融合聲音、動作、敘事與多媒體元素，風格創新，富啟發性。她曾於美國卡內基音樂廳、林肯中心及韓國國立劇場等世界各地知名場地公演，並獲羅馬獎、古根漢獎及傅爾布萊特獎學金等肯定。除了個人創作外，徐秋雁亦致力推動藝術指導及交流。

我們誠邀同學參與她的駐校藝術家活動，包括工作坊、分享會及演出，一同探索多元創作思維，走進跨文化藝術的世界。

We are delighted to welcome Jen Shyu, an experimental vocalist, composer, multi-instrumentalist, producer and educator, as CUHK’s 2026 Artist-in-Residence.

Jen’s work is shaped by a lifelong curiosity about music, movement, language and culture. She began classical training in ballet, piano and violin at an early age, and later studied opera at Stanford University. Her artistic research has also taken her to Brazil, China, Cuba, East Timor, Indonesia, Japan and Korea, where she explored traditional music and dance.

Her work brings together sound, movement, storytelling and multimedia performance. Jen has presented her work at leading venues around the world, such as Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center and the National Theater of Korea. Her achievements include the Rome Prize, a Guggenheim Fellowship and a Fulbright Scholarship. Beyond her own creative practice, Jen is also passionate about artistic mentorship and exchange.

We warmly invite students to take part in her residency events, including workshops, sharing sessions and performances, and explore new creative ideas and cross-cultural art together.

👏🏻中大文學院衷心祝賀翻譯系Michael Sharkey博士（翻譯哲學博士/2025）獲頒2025年度「年青學者論文獎」

Sharkey博士的博士論文題目為《Rewriting Mao: On the Ideologized Representation of Mao Zedong in Institutional Translations of Volume V of The Selected Works of Mao Zedong》，探討意識形態如何作為機構權力與利益體系的體現，影響毛澤東在翻譯中的形象呈現。

論文比較了三個機構對《毛澤東選集》第五卷所作的翻譯，分別是中國外文出版社、美國中央情報局資助的Joint Publication Research Service以及美國布朗大學的翻譯。這些機構的譯作被視為知識建構的實例，延伸並強化了英語世界理解毛澤東及其著作的特定方式。

有關Sharkey博士對毛澤東著作英譯的觀點，可見於近期發表在《World Literature Studies》的文章「Translation and the Making of History: The Objectification of Mao Zedong」。

✨𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝗮𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗔𝗿𝘁𝘀 𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗹𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗗𝗿. 𝗠𝗶𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗲𝗹 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘆 (𝗣𝗵𝗗 𝗶𝗻 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻/𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱) 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗻 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗶𝘀 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱

Dr. Sharkey’s PhD thesis, entitled “Rewriting Mao: On the Ideologized Representation of Mao Zedong in Institutional Translations of Volume V of The Selected Works of Mao Zedong,” looks at how ideology, as an expression of the power of institutions and the interests they serve, impacts representations of Mao in translation.

The thesis compares three translations of Volume V of 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘦𝘭𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘞𝘰𝘳𝘬𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘔𝘢𝘰 𝘡𝘦𝘥𝘰𝘯𝘨 carried out by the Chinese Foreign Languages Press, the CIA-funded Joint Publication Research Service, and the American Ivy-league college Brown University. The translations of Mao produced by these institutions are viewed as instances of knowledge creation, extending and reinforcing particular ways of looking at Mao and his work in the English-speaking world.

Some of Dr. Sharkey’s perspectives on the translation of Mao into English are presented in the article “Translation and the Making of History: The Objectification of Mao Zedong,” recently published in 𝘞𝘰𝘳𝘭𝘥 𝘓𝘪𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘚𝘵𝘶𝘥𝘪𝘦𝘴.

鄭菊嫿（英文系一年級）於今年夏天到訪中國吉林省的長白山。她以動人的詩句和真摯的繪畫，表達對大自然奧妙的敬佩。

Zheng Juhua (English, Year 1) visited Mount Changbai at Jilin, China this summer. The wonderful encounter renders her true respect for nature, where she praises through her sentimental words and drawing.

Child of fog, on its daily patrol
But Fog is a ruthful ruler really—
It accepts the flowers, even if they’ve had quarrels.

A traveler, I did not see Lake of Heaven
The popular site
Fog refused to shift today
But as I trudged down the slope, I saw
Thousands of tiny lamps lit up the foggy dew.
Pink. White. Purple with thin, long crystallized petals
On an altitude of 2961 meters

Chipmunks zoomed between them. Bees came.
Life successfully built itself—again!
I missed the Lake of Heaven, but
I saw a true fraction of Mt. Changbai.

🌴潮汕澄海的南洋舊夢 (2026.05.06 – 08.02)
陳薇(文化研究文學碩士一年級)因為一趟泰國清邁的研學之旅，推動她關注家鄉潮汕和東南亞地區的文化聯繫。

陳薇：
在結束了五月的清邁研學之旅後，我深刻地意識到我的家鄉潮汕與東南亞地區之間的相融共生的文化羈絆。於是我在今年暑期去遊覽了坐落於家鄉的陳慈黌故居。

陳慈黌故居凝聚了潮汕人古老的南洋夢想，記錄了本土社群與南洋僑居社會之間跨越海洋的文化交流。

這座百年宅邸，是獨屬於潮汕與南洋的建築詩章，將傳統潮汕民居規制、南洋熱帶風情與西式巴洛克美學揉於一體。

百年前，無數潮汕先民背井離鄉、遠赴南洋謀生。他們不僅推動了兩地之間的文化交融，更滋養出新的文化內涵，拉近了這兩片遙遠土地之間的距離。

一場跨越山海的文明邂逅，在潮汕大地上，沉澱為永不落幕的南洋舊夢。

🫧𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗡𝗮𝗻𝘆𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝗗𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗶𝗻 𝗖𝗵𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗵𝗮𝗶,𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗼𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗻 (𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲.𝟬𝟱.𝟬𝟲 – 𝟬𝟴.𝟬𝟮)
Chen Wei (MA in Intercultural Studies, Year 1) went for a study trip in Chiang Mai, Thailand. The experience encouraged her to trace the cultural ties between her hometown Chaoshan, China and the Southeast Asia region.

𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝘆 𝗖𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗪𝗲𝗶:
Following my study trip to Chiang Mai, I better understand the cultural ties between my hometown Chaoshan and Southeast Asia, which intrigues me to visit the Former Residence of Chen Cihong in Chaoshan, China this summer.

The Former Residence of Chen Cihong materialises the old Nanyang dream of Chaoshan, recording cross ocean cultural flows between local communities and Nanyang migrant societies (“Nanyang” is a historical Chinese term for Southeast Asia).

This century old mansion mixes traditional Chaoshan housing structures, tropical Nanyang features and Western Baroque styles.

A century ago, many Chaoshan people travelled to Nanyang for work. They promoted cultural integration between the two regions, nourished new cultural connotations and bridged the long distance between these lands.

Brought across the sea by Chaoshan migrants, plumeria links the cultures of Chaoshan and Southeast Asia.

🇸🇪 瑞典交流與歐洲之旅 (2026.01.13 – 06.21)
陳俊康John（翻譯系三年級）的瑞典留學之旅從孤身的自我探索，昇華至與新識夥伴結隊同行的遊歷與闖蕩，見證海外交流為人生帶來的轉變。

John:
每個人的Exchange之旅都不一樣，感激這趟旅程遇到的人，成為陪伴在我身邊的朋友，讓我有了比一般Exchange不一樣的體驗；感激他們每天的陪伴，讓我在冬天的瑞典下不至於抑鬱；更感激他們與我一同到處旅行，無論是奧地利的博物館、匈牙利的美景、挪威的峽灣、荷蘭小小的學生宿舍，還是法國歷史悠久的建築，都留下屬於我們的美好回憶。

Exchange本是一次冒險，是一個人踏上異國他鄉，是一個人的自我探索之旅。

而對我來說，Exchange是與這群人的一場永不落幕的盛宴。

✈️ 𝗝𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲 (𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲.𝟬𝟭.𝟭𝟯 – 𝟬𝟲.𝟮𝟭)
John Chan (Translation, Year 3) started his exchange journey in Sweden alone. His solitary self-exploration evolved to an adventure with friends newly met during the journey. It tells the wonderful impacts brought to one’s life through foreign exchange studying.

𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝘆 𝗝𝗼𝗵𝗻:
Studying abroad means something different to everybody. For me, it’s wandering around with the friends I have met through this exchange journey. Together, we visited so many places. We have visited Austria and Hungary. We also explored Norway and its spectacular fjord scenery. We have squeezed the five of us living in a tiny student accommodation in Netherlands and visited different historical buildings in France.

We cooked every day and accompanied each other throughout the cold winter in Sweden. We explored a lot of new things, encountered with different cultures, accepted lots of new challenges and tried the things we dare not going for back in Hong Kong. I sincerely appreciate my friends’ support for lighting up my exchange journey.

🇦🇹 遊學奧地利 (2026.02 – 06)
郭桂彰Tom（宗教研究三年級）遊學奧地利維也納，在豐富的探索與見聞以外，他更獲得觸動心靈的體會。

Tom：
「若果這個世界有神的話，那麼神就在美裡頭。」

這是我到歐洲不過短短數月，留下過最深刻的體會。
交換對我產生的影響不是一言兩語可以交代。朋友們見到我開口的第一句便是「好玩嗎？」
常常被這個問題問啞了口，這個答案不能單純是好玩或不好玩
想起南海十三郎當中一句對白：「箇中滋味，唯有自己知。」
只能說有起有落，無論如何，也想從頭來一次……

而我最懷緬的，是藝術裏的美，是人對人之間的關懷。
今香港七月潮濕的風已無法將我帶回維也納的思憶中，就當大夢一場。

✨𝗔 𝗝𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻 𝗩𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗻𝗮, 𝗔𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗮 (𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲.𝟬𝟮 - 𝟬𝟲)
Tom Kwok (Religious Studies, Year 3) toured Europe during foreign exchange. He found a soul touching realisation beyond the extensive explorations.

𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝘆 𝗧𝗼𝗺:
"If there is a God in this world, then God resides within beauty itself."

The most profound revelation I have carried back from my brief few months in Europe. The mark this exchange left upon me is far too vast for mere words. When my friends see me, their very first question is always, "Was it fun?"
It often leaves me speechless, and the answer is never as simple as "yes" or "no." It brings those ups and downs to my mind.
I would live it all over again without a hesitation.

What I yearn for most is the beauty in art, and the warmth shared between human souls. Now, the breeze of Hong Kong can no longer carry me back to my memories of Vienna. Perhaps I shall simply treat it all as a grand, beautiful dream.

🪵香港嘉道理農場學徒培訓計劃(2026.02 – 08)
吳芯慧Priscilla（藝術系三年級）透過照片、影片和插圖，記錄2026年暑假參加嘉道理農場的學徒培訓計劃。Priscilla透過這次獨特的經歷拓展人際關係，增進本科以外的知識，展現她在2026盛夏的豐富收穫。

Priscilla：
今年夏天，我參加了嘉道理農場的「年輪新篇：木藝傳承與共創｜學徒培訓計劃 2026」，與12位來自不同背景的優秀同學共同經歷一段充實旅程。在資深木工匠人的指導下，我學會了榫接、雕刻，並親手製作了椅子、哨子和木盒。現在，我正全心投入創作畢業作品，一隻以混合木材製成的海兔色彩雕塑，將於九月底至十二月在嘉道理農場展出。這些照片、影片和插圖，不僅記錄了我的創作，也捕捉了我在嘉道理農場遇見的野生動物與自然奇觀。感恩今年夏天的經歷，為我的身心靈帶來美好的蛻變。

🌳𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗺𝗲 @ 𝗞𝗮𝗱𝗼𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗲 𝗙𝗮𝗿𝗺, 𝗛𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗞𝗼𝗻𝗴 (𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲.𝟬𝟮 – 𝟬𝟴)
Priscilla Ng (Fine Arts, Year 3) shares a collection of photographs, videos, and illustrations documenting her transformative experience at the Apprenticeship Training Programme 2026 at Kadoorie Farm. Priscilla enjoyed a blooming summer of new friendships and knowledge through this unique experience.

𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝘆 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗮:
This summer, I joined the "Growth Ring" Apprenticeship Programme at Kadoorie Farm—an intensive journey with 12 talented classmates from a diverse background. Guided by master woodworkers, I learned joinery, carving, crafting a chair, whistle, and boxes. Now, I'm deep in my final piece: a sea slug sculpture using mixed woods to mirror nature's colours, to be exhibited at Kadoorie Farm from late September to December this year. These photos, videos, and illustrations capture not only my creations but also the wildlife and quiet wonders I encountered along the way. This summer shaped my hands, heart, and perspective and I'm truly grateful.

🌟潘俊楠教授榮膺文學院傑出學人

中大文學院衷心祝賀語言學及現代語言系潘俊楠教授獲委任為文學院傑出學人，任期自2026年起，為期五年。

潘教授是理論語言學領域的卓越學者，在生成句法、最簡方案、句法製圖理論及比較句法等方面均有重要研究成果，備受國際學界肯定。此項殊榮表揚潘教授在教學、研究及學術發展方面的傑出表現，以及他對語言學的貢獻。

潘教授分享道︰「這份榮譽不僅是個人肯定，更是與同事和學生長年交流切磋的成果。展望未來，我期待繼續與大家攜手探索語言與認知的奧妙。」

The Faculty is delighted to announce that Professor PAN Victor Junnan of the Department of Linguistics and Modern Languages has been appointed Outstanding Fellow of the Faculty of Arts for a five-year term from 2026.

A leading scholar in theoretical linguistics, Professor Pan has made influential contributions to generative syntax, the Minimalist Program, cartography, and comparative syntax. This appointment recognises Professor Pan’s excellence in teaching, research, and scholarship, as well as his significant contributions to linguistics in Hong Kong, the region, and beyond.

“This honour feels less like a personal achievement and more like a reflection of the exchanges with colleagues and students that have shaped my thinking over the years. I hope this encouragement will drive our shared efforts forward and explore new ideas together.” said Professor Pan.

Congratulations to Professor Pan on this well-deserved honour, and we wish him continued success in the years ahead.

🎊中大文學院衷心祝賀文化及宗教研究系黃詠欣教授榮獲2025年度「青年學者研究成就獎」。

黃教授的研究探討全球脈絡下藝術與科技交匯領域中，藝術家與從業者的文化經濟。她結合理論與實踐，研究範疇涵蓋媒體藝術史、媒體與文化研究以及技術哲學。作為MetaObjects（元物）工作室的聯合創辦人，她亦透過實務經驗汲取知識，將其回饋於學術研究之中。她的研究成果刊載於多本主要期刊和專書，包括《Leonardo》（2026）、《Artnodes》（2025）、《DATAbrowser》（2025）和《Visual Culture Studies》（2022）；另出版了個人專著《Ecologies of Artistic Practice: Rethinking Cultural Economies through Art and Technology》（麻省理工學院出版社，2025）。

Professor Wong’s research explores the cultural economies of artists and practitioners working at the intersections of art and technology within a global context. Bridging theory and practice, her research engages media art history, media and cultural studies, and philosophy of technology, while drawing knowledge through her own practice as co-founder of the studio, MetaObjects. Professor Wong has published in journals and book chapters in 𝘓𝘦𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘳𝘥𝘰 (2026); 𝘈𝘳𝘵𝘯𝘰𝘥𝘦𝘴 (2025); 𝘋𝘈𝘛𝘈𝘣𝘳𝘰𝘸𝘴𝘦𝘳 (2025); 𝘝𝘪𝘴𝘶𝘢𝘭 𝘊𝘶𝘭𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘚𝘵𝘶𝘥𝘪𝘦𝘴 (2022). She is the author of the monograph, 𝘌𝘤𝘰𝘭𝘰𝘨𝘪𝘦𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘈𝘳𝘵𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘤 𝘗𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘦: 𝘙𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘊𝘶𝘭𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘢𝘭 𝘌𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘰𝘮𝘪𝘦𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩 𝘈𝘳𝘵 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘛𝘦𝘤𝘩𝘯𝘰𝘭𝘰𝘨𝘺 (The MIT Press, 2025).
