你有沒有想過——如果運動真的是一種「藥」,我們如何讓每個人都拿到這張處方?

小時候的容樹恆教授,夢想是成為職業足球員,卻因十字韌帶撕裂被迫接受重建手術,讓足球夢戛然而止,卻完全重寫了他的人生軌跡。這條彎路把他帶進了運動醫學。奧運擊劍金牌得主江旻憓的兩次十字韌帶手術、羽毛球謝影雪和體操石偉雄的傷後復出,背後都有他。自2003年起,他每週定期去香港體育學院義務出診,二十多年沒斷過。

作為中大醫學院矯形外科及創傷學系系主任,容教授服務的對象絕不止於聚光燈下的精英運動員。在2004年,他創辦了香港首個且唯一的運動醫學及健康科學理學碩士課程。二十年來培育了過千名專業人才,共同構建了一個同時支援香港精英運動員及公眾健康的專業網絡。

他一直倡導「運動即良藥」,積極將「運動處方」帶入基層醫療系統。從未圓的足球夢到今天的全能守護,他做的其實是同一件事:讓運動醫學的價值從精英體育延伸至更廣泛的社區,成為普通人也用得上的醫療。

Have you ever wondered—if exercise is truly "medicine," how can we ensure everyone receives their prescription?

As a youth, Professor Patrick Yung aspired to be a professional football player, but a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) forced him to undergo reconstructive surgery—an event that brought his football dreams to an abrupt halt but entirely rewrote the course of his life. This path connected him to sports medicine. He performed two ACL surgeries on Olympic fencing gold medallist Vivian Kong Man-wai and enabled injury-plagued athletes Tse Ying-suet and Shek Wai-hung to compete in the Games. Since 2003, he has regularly volunteered his time at the Hong Kong Sports Institute (HKSI) to treat elite athletes—a commitment spanning over two decades.

As Chairman of the Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology at CUHK Medicine, his mission extends far beyond elite athletes in the spotlight. In 2004, he founded Hong Kong's first and only taught master's programme in sports medicine. Over the past 20 years, the programme has nurtured more than a thousand professionals. Together, they have built a professional network that supports both Hong Kong’s elite athletes and public health.

He has long advocated "exercise is medicine," envisioning a healthcare system where family doctors can confidently supplement traditional medication with scientifically backed "exercise prescriptions." From his unfulfilled childhood football dreams to his current medical crusade, his journey has always been about forging a genuine, lasting connection between sports, healthcare, and the community.

Meet Shirmen, a Year 3 student in the Department of Social Work at CUHK, and a recipient of the Scholarship for Outstanding Performance awarded by the HKSAR Government. For him, life at CUHK is defined by a constant dialogue between theory and lived experience, from early mornings at the Learning Common and late-night chats with peers about social justice, to the quiet joy of seeing a child smile during community service.

At CUHK, the values of social work are not just taught in classrooms but are put into practice through every action. Embracing this philosophy, Shirmen has actively thrown himself into social work during his time at university, constantly reflecting and growing through his experiences. He spent months walking alongside a mother trapped in an emotional low, helping her step out of the shadows. He also took the lead in launching a five-session mutual aid group project for elderly caregivers. These experiences have fundamentally transformed his role from a mere problem-solver to an empathetic companion who understands the power of enduring relationship-centred practice.

When speaking about his award, Shirmen expressed that this scholarship has made his social responsibility even clearer, reaffirming his original commitment to supporting marginalized groups and giving back to society.

The HKSAR Government Scholarship Fund and the Self-financing Post-secondary Education Fund aim to attract outstanding students to pursue higher education in Hong Kong while supporting the quality and sustainable development of the post-secondary education sector. This year, about 900 CUHK students received scholarships and awards under various categories. Recipients at CUHK come from countries and regions including Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Thailand, Myanmar, Mongolia and Kazakhstan.

中大日前與廣州市南沙區人民政府及廣州市第一人民醫院正式簽署三方合作協議,攜手建設「香港中文大學大灣區臨床研究中心(廣州南沙)」,並同步為「大灣區肌骨康復中心」揭牌。
