How can academic research truly step beyond the ivory tower and transform lives? 🧠✨

In our latest feature, we sit down with Prof. Winnie Mak from the Department of Psychology at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). Back in 2002, Prof. Mak started as the sole researcher tackling mental health stigma in Hong Kong. Driven by a lifelong calling, she has dedicated her career to ensuring that research actively drives systemic change and fosters equal opportunity.

To combat deep-seated prejudices and bridge the empathy gap, Prof. Mak founded "@說書人 StoryTaler" 10 years ago—harnessing the power of storytelling from individuals with lived experiences to advocate for mental health and human dignity.

Pioneering digital mental health long before it became mainstream, she also spearheaded the "@賽馬會心導遊計劃 Jockey Club TourHeart Project", a landmark hybrid online-offline platform supported by the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, alongside the newly developed AI companion "A Boon" to empower users in their daily well-being journeys.

Reflecting on her personal journey of resilience, Prof. Mak shares: "Everybody is so diverse. Why are certain people with certain upbringing or certain lived experience have to be subjected to unfair treatment?" This personal conviction inspires her lab's core mission: moving beyond academic citations to co-create a diverse, inclusive, and well-being-conducive ecosystem for all.

🔍 How do we ensure that experimental findings in social and behavioral sciences truly generalize across complex real-world situations? Join us for “Integrative Social Science”, an online seminar by Prof. Abdullah Almaatouq, Assistant Professor at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), whose research spans computational social science, experimental methodology, and human collaboration!

In this talk, Prof. Almaatouq will address a critical limitation in the dominant experimental paradigm of social and behavioral science—where studies often fail to generalize effectively beyond specific conditions. He will outline an alternative approach that inverts traditional scientific reasoning, starting first with questions of generalization, followed by targeted experimentation and analysis, and ultimately building more robust theories. Illustrative examples from ongoing work on collaboration and cooperation will be shared!

📖 Abstract
As the global population ages, elucidating the neurobiological substrates of cognitive aging has become a central priority in contemporary neuroscience. Functioning as a pivotal bridge between microscopic neural circuits and macroscopic cognitive behaviors, neural oscillations serve as core biomarkers of brain network integration.

In this talk, Dr. Han will present recent work integrating large-scale scalp EEG and intracranial EEG datasets to characterize the normative spatiotemporal evolution of alpha-band activity across aging. Leveraging the Wilson–Cowan computational framework, the team dissects excitation–inhibition (E–I) circuit imbalances driving cognitive decline. Furthermore, Dr. Han will share results on long-term exercise interventions as a proactive approach to modulating E–I balance, revealing the functional role of alpha rhythm in mitigating cognitive aging.
