The School has long been known as a centre of excellence for both the study and the practice of music. Since the 1980s it has undergone expansion and moderni

zation in several important respects: the broadening of its undergraduate curriculum to encompass potentially all types of music as objects of study; the adoption of an approach to teaching and learning that is not narrowly vocational but which provides students with eminently practical experience of scholarship and creativity (composition and performance); and the expansion of postgraduate studies. Today the School is more active, delivering many more programmes and public events, than at any time in its history.

The University College Cork Choir is a long‑established and much‑loved ensemble within the cultural life of University College Cork. Formed in 2012, the choir comprises of students from the School of Music and Theatre as well as staff from across the university, the choir has become a firm favourite in UCC’s FUAIM concert series, performing regularly both on and off campus. Its reputation is built on a distinctive blend of musical excellence, community spirit, and artistic curiosity, which has made it one of the university’s most recognisable performing groups.

The UCC Concert Band is a vibrant and inclusive ensemble bringing together students, staff, alumni and members of the wider community to make music at the heart of university life. Established in 2024, the band has quickly become a key contributor to UCC’s cultural and public‑facing activity, performing regularly at university events and collaborative concerts.

An exciting fundraiser concert directed by UCC Music lecturer Dr. Eva McMullan-Glossop happening in Crosshaven next month!đŸŽ¶

Mundy, Paddy Casey and The Oars Unite for Special Crosshaven Fundraiser đŸŽ”

Crosshaven, Co. Cork is set for an unforgettable night of Irish music as Mundy, Paddy Casey and acclaimed Cork band The Oars come together for a special fundraising concert in the Basketball Hall at ColĂĄiste Muire, Crosshaven, on Friday, August 22nd, 6:30pm.

Organised by Dr Eva McMullan and the Crosshaven Community Choir, Sing Out the Summer will raise funds towards the development of the school's basketball hall, a facility that will benefit both the students of ColĂĄiste Muire and the wider Crosshaven community for generations to come.

Adding to the occasion, KC from Cork's RedFM will serve as Master of Ceremonies, bringing his trademark warmth and humour to what promises to be a memorable evening of exceptional music and community spirit.

The concert will feature headline performances from two of Ireland's most celebrated singer-songwriters, Mundy and Paddy Casey, whose musical friendship spans more than three decades.

Opening the evening will be The Oars, one of Ireland's most exciting live bands. Renowned for their soaring harmonies, exceptional musicianship and electrifying performances, they have earned a reputation as one of the country's finest original acts.

UCC Music staff and postgraduate student to present at SARC ITM Symposium đŸŽ¶đŸ“š

UCC Department of Music lecturer and MA Irish Traditional Music programme coordinator Dr. Jack Talty, and MA Experimental Sound Practice student Colleen Freeman will present and participate in panels at Irish Traditional Music and its Edges on 24th July. The symposium is organised and hosted by Queen's University Belfast's Sonic Arts Research Centre (SARC).

About SARC:

This symposium is a knowledge exchange, performance and discussion day, highlighting practices, considerations, and communities on the fringes of the tradition.

While experimentation and development has always been a feature of traditional music, there are a remarkable number of recent examples of creative work that clearly exist on the boundaries of what is understood as Irish traditional music. Artists are combining standard approaches with new technologies, improvisation, other art forms and other genres of music.

Dr. Jack Talty will chair the paper session 'Edges of Place' and participate in the Plenary Discussion (in partnership with BelfastTrad).

Colleen Freeman will present her work 'Is Maith an Scéalaí an Aimsir: Rain, Embodiment, and Sonic Agency' as part of the concert closing the symposium.

Call for Commissions - Celebrating the Bicentenary of Isabella Honan đŸŽ¶

The Honan Trust UCC invites expressions of interest for the creation of a new commemorative musical work to mark the bicentenary of the birth of Isabella Honan (1826–2026), a figure whose legacy continues to shape cultural and educational life in Cork. We welcome proposals for either a vocal or instrumental composition that thoughtfully reflect Isabella Honan’s contribution to Irish cultural heritage, the university, the values of the Trust, and the significance of this milestone anniversary.

Warm congratulations to Purab Riddhi Chaudhuri, who successfully completed his doctoral viva online earlier this week. Purab's thesis is entitled "Dialogues and Crossovers: Re-creating community space through Applied Ethnomusicology for miji-migun repertoire among the Apatanis of Arunachal Pradesh" (supervisors, Jonathan Stock and Lidia Guzy from the Department for the Study of Religions).

Here we all are in the viva, including Richard Widdess (external examiner), Alexander Khalil (internal examiner), Emma Nic Carthaigh (independent chair). Purab has also sent a set of photos that illustrate his study experience in Cork.

UCC Music graduate Linda Buckley holds a PhD in composition! A recent alumni spotlight article was dedicated to her brilliant work on our website.

About "Said The Dead":
‘In Cork city, a derelict mental hospital is being converted into modern apartments. One passerby has always flinched as she passes the place. Had her birth occurred in another decade, she too might have lived within those walls. Now, she notices a sign: FOR SALE. It is the first of many signs. Following them, she finds herself drawn into an irresistible river of forgotten voices, those of the women who knew this place best: insistent, vivid and true. They murmur from archives and old records; they whisper from stairwells and walls. Among them – and in one figure in particular — she may find meaning, solace, rage; her own salvation, perhaps, or her own vanishing?’

Doireann Ní Ghríofa’s writing leaps between genres and times, to explore how the past makes itself felt within the present. Her book A Ghost in the Throat went on to be translated into 20 languages, was named a New York Times Notable Book of the Year and won the James Tait Black Prize.

Linda Buckley is an award winning Irish composer (born in Cork) with a particular interest in working across many disciplines. Most notably film and in the realm of drone and dark ambient music. She was featured by Iggy Pop on BBC Radio 6 as “somebody really special”. She has written extensively for orchestra (BBC Symphony Orchestra, RTÉ NSO), was elected to Aosdána in 2021, and is Associate Artist with Chamber Music Scotland.

Congratulations to our past Music graduate and former winner of the Staf Gebruers prize 23/24, Óisín Dilger who recently completed post-graduate studies at the Royal Carillon School in Mechelen (Belgium) in which he has been awarded the highest category of “With great distinction”.
