As Ireland’s leading medical school, the UCD School of Medicine offers undergraduate degree programmes in Medicine (direct entry and graduate entry), Physiology, Radiography and Biomedical Health & Life Sciences. The School has over forty graduate taught programmes ranging from certificate to masters degree awards and a further twenty graduate research programmes at masters or doctoral level with

over 400 graduate students. Our portfolio of biomedical, clinical and translational research has over 75 principal investigators, 50 post-doctoral scientists and 250 doctoral students with grants under management worth approximately €75 million. Together with Mater Misericordiae University Hospital and St Vincent’s Healthcare Group, the School has established Ireland's first academic health centre, Dublin Academic Medical Centre and is the academic partner in the emerging Ireland East Hospital Group, a network of 11 acute hospitals. Our clinical training programmes are delivered at six major Dublin teaching hospitals and across the country through sixteen affiliated acute, general or specialist hospitals. The School also has a nationwide primary care clinical training network comprising over 190 general practitioners. Our large and experienced academic faculty, innovative programmes and state-of-the-art facilities provide a stimulating education and research environment for students. These academic activities aim to improve patient healthcare by purposefully linking treatment, teaching and research capability.

👏Congratulations to UCD Medicine alumnus (Class of 1987) and former UCD Dean of Medicine (2006 – 2013), Professor William G. Powderly, who, on 1 August 2026 will be named the Larry J. Shapiro Distinguished Professor in Interdisciplinary Health Sciences.

Dr. Powderly is currently the Dr. J. William Campbell Professor of Medicine and Director of the Institute of Clinical and Translational Sciences (ICTS), and Associate Dean for Clinical and Translational Science at Washington University School of Medicine (WashU Medicine).

Dr. Powderly is recognised as an outstanding mentor and leader for faculty development and training programs and has served on the editorial boards of multiple major infectious diseases journals. He has played a major role in leading the Division of Infectious Diseases and expanding clinical trials and clinical and translational research at WashU Medicine.

At University College Dublin, researchers in the UCD School of Medicine are exploring how digital tools can assist parents and families in need of support.

Annie Wilson is researching the role fathers could play in encouraging healthy mental development in adolescent boys, stating ''I came interested in the online world, and how what children and adolescents are consuming online is changing how they fundamentally engage with their peers. As I started to look into this area, I was drawn to boys specifically. The literature is starting to provide evidence around the stark disconnect between boys’ online world and their emotional wellbeing.''

👏🎉Congratulations to UCD School of Medicine’s Professor Cormac Taylor, who has been named the recipient of The Physiological Society’s 2027 Widening Participation in Physiology Prize Lecture.

The annual prize lecture recognises impactful work to increase the number and diversity of people studying and conducting research in physiology. Professor Taylor is a passionate advocate for equality, diversity and inclusion in science, with a particular focus on the challenges faced by LGBTQIA+ scientists and the importance of engaging men in EDI initiatives.

A groundbreaking pan-European coalition of experimental and computational researchers is set to transform cancer research by using AI approaches to predict how cancer cells behave, survive, and resist treatment. A commentary paper by the consortium was published today in Nature Genetics.

Cancer treatment has been transformed by the development of targeted therapies – drugs that exploit the specific mutations present in a patient’s tumour. Unfortunately, for the majority of patients, none of the current targeted therapies can act on the mutations that their cancer carries. To identify new therapeutic targets, huge international efforts have mapped out many of cancer’s ‘weak spots’ known as ‘vulnerabilities’. However, these maps are mostly descriptive – they show what the weak spots are, but they don't explain why they happen or which ones might be most promising as therapies for a specific patient group.

The PRECISE (Predictive Relationships Explaining Cancer Genetic Interactions and Synthetic Essentiality) initiative – which brings together over 30 leading experimental and computational research groups across nine European countries – aims to shift the paradigm from observing vulnerabilities to predicting them. Instead of waiting to see how a tumour will react to a drug in a lab or a patient, PRECISE will use advanced machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) to predict how a tumour will respond before testing is even conducted.

The consortium has set out the project's vision in a commentary paper which has been published today in the prestigious journal Nature Genetics.

A recent pilot study between UCD School Of Medicine, Wavescope, and Centric Health explored what happens when routine vital signs are collected before the GP consultation rather than during it. Published in JMIR Publications, the study is titled, ‘Assessing the Feasibility and Acceptability of Implementing a Preclinic Vital Signs Assessment in Primary Care: Cross-Sectional Pilot Study’.

The findings indicate positive engagement from patients and clinicians, with potential for reallocation of clinician time away from data gathering.
