🐦 The 8th Annual Swift Conference took place this week on ATU's Mayo campus.

Bringing together 185 delegates from 16 countries, from China to Turkey, the conference provided an opportunity to share knowledge, research and ideas on swift conservation efforts worldwide. The event took place to the backdrop of the distinctive calls of the swifts in residence on the Mayo campus.

🎥 Special guest speakers included Eoin Warner, naturalist and wildlife documentary maker.

📕A new edition of Paddy Tunney’s Where Songs Do Thunder: Travels in Traditional Song was launched at ATU Galway by Dr Orla Flynn, President of ATU, alongside members of the Tunney family, staff, students and invited guests.

Published in partnership with the ATU Department of Heritage & Tourism and the Tunney Song Tradition Trust, the book returns to print after more than 30 years and includes an introduction by Paddy Tunney’s son, Dr John Tunney, ATU Heritage lecturer and traditional singer-songwriter.

The publication celebrates the legacy of one of Ireland’s most influential traditional singers, collectors and songwriters.

🌍 ATU recently hosted the Invent for the Planet 2026 World Finals on its Galway City campus, bringing together student teams from across the globe to tackle real-world challenges in sustainability, engineering and entrepreneurship.

Following an intensive weekend of collaboration and innovation, Team HexCrate from Texas A&M University (USA) secured first place, with Team TerraCell from the Lebanese American University taking second place.

Representing Ireland, Team Connect, comprising students from ATU, University College Cork and the University of Galway, achieved third place overall and won the People’s Choice Award for their food-waste app, WasteLess. Team LeafLock from Jordan shared the third-place position.

🎓⚙️ATU students have been recognised for innovation, creativity and engineering excellence at the 2026 Annual Engineering Exhibition and Competition at ATU Galway City

Sean Loewen was named overall winner of the Undergraduate Engineering Competition and also received the Energy Engineering Award for his project on the decarbonisation of heat-treatment surface finishes.

He was joined among the winners by students across the categories of Agricultural Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering Design, Software and Electronic Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering.

The event showcased more than 120 student projects, with finalists evaluated by external engineering professionals and industry representatives.

🪑✨Last week, students from the BA in Furniture Design and Manufacturing at ATU Connemara showcased their work to family and friends at their end-of-year exhibition.

From participatory design and the incorporation of concrete into fine furniture, to sustainable circular design, this year’s exhibition was yet another extraordinary reflection of the students’ hard work, creativity, and talent.
