The 2026 Aleen Cust Symposium, held last week on the Mountbellew Campus, celebrated the life and legacy of Aleen Cust, the first female veterinary surgeon in Britain and Ireland.

Opened by President Catherine Connolly, the symposium brought together historians, veterinary professionals, researchers and the local community to explore Cust's pioneering contribution to veterinary medicine, agriculture and women's history.

🦇 During a recent field course on Inis Mór, students on the ATU MSc Conservation Behaviour programme used bat detectors to identify bat species by their echolocation calls.
Sarah Beth Bradley, a student at the Galway campus, explains how the technology works and how her research explores the impact of artificial lighting on bats.

🌿🦋 Students from the ATU MSc Conservation Behaviour programme recently took part in a residential field course on Inis Mór, Aran Islands.

Inis Mór is a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and an important site for Ireland's biodiversity. During the field course, students carried out species surveys across a range of habitats, developing practical field skills while collecting biodiversity records.

The records gathered by the class have been submitted to the National Biodiversity Data Centre, where they will contribute to biodiversity monitoring and conservation in Ireland.

⚡🔌 The Preliminary Electrical Industrial Controls WorldSkills Competition was hosted at the ATU Galway campus on Monday, 22 June 2026.

Two students, Dara Cleary (O'Keeffe Electrical Ltd) and Enda Farrell (ESB Networks), were selected from the eligible electrical apprentices who attended Phase 6 of their Electrical Apprenticeship training at ATU Galway during the 2025/2026 academic year. It is a fantastic achievement for both students to have been selected to participate in the preliminary competition.

The preliminary competition consisted of wiring a motor control panel and developing a PLC program to control motor operation.

Six successful competitors from the preliminary competitions held nationally will progress to the WorldSkills Ireland National Competition, which will take place at the RDS in Dublin this September.

ATU would like to thank Peter Curran Electric Ltd for generously sponsoring gift vouchers for the two students who participated in the competition.

👏 Congratulations to Dara and Enda on their achievement, and we wish them every success in the future.
