The University of Galway was privileged to welcome Juan Carlos Jiménez Marín, Director General of DG LINC, and his delegation, recently. Mr. Jiménez Marín is responsible for providing interpretation services to various European Union forums.
During his visit, he met with the University's management, including the President, Professor David J. Burn. Opportunities for collaboration, student professional development, and the importance of high-quality training in interpreting in an international context were discussed.
Mr. Jiménez Marín also visited the MA in Conference Interpreting course, where he met with students of the programme in An Teanglann. He spoke about the work carried out within DG LINC and the skills and competencies required for a successful career as a conference interpreter in European institutions. It was a valuable opportunity for the students to gain insight into the professional world of interpreting at the highest level.
There was a lively discussion with other guests: Cynthia Ní Mhurchú MEP, about multilingualism, the role of the Irish language in the Irish Presidency of the European Union, and in the future of Europe.
This visit strengthens the link between the University of Galway and the institutions of the European Union and underlines our ongoing commitment to academic excellence and international collaboration. This collaboration will continue over the summer with an intensive Irish language interpreting course for graduates preparing for the European Union certification exam.
The European Union has issued an open advertisement for qualified interpreters in English, Irish, French and other languages. Further information is available here:
