Mechanical Engineering graduand Gary Moore is showcasing his innovative final-year project in the Innovation Arena at the 2026 National Ploughing Championships in Tullamore this week.

He was one of the top three students in Ireland shortlisted for Young Innovator of the Year with a project developed as part of his final year at ATU Galway City.

Under the supervision of Dr Tom Roche from ATU’s Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, Gary designed a new mounting system to make attaching large equipment to tractors quicker, easier and safer for a single operator.

👏 A fantastic achievement and a proud moment for his classmates and the Mechanical Engineering team at ATU Galway City.

Well done to Conor McKeown (Louth) and Tamzin Friel (Donegal) on their recent success at the National Ploughing Championships.
Both former graduates of the course;
Conor finished second in the Under 28 Conventional Senior Plough class last year
While Tamzin finished second in the Novice Conventional Intermediate Plough class last year.
This year both of them took that step onto the top of the podium in their respective classes
Well done the pair of you.
Another keen plough man Finn in 3rd year was also on duty marshalling at this years event.

On Wednesday the 16th of September 2026, the new first year agriculture class in Letterkenny ATU left Letterkenny at 6am. They were accompanied by lecturer, 𝙇𝙞𝙖𝙢 Mc Kinney.
It was a good chance for the new class to get to know one another.
The land in Screggan, Co. Offaly was dry and boots or even runners were suitable footwear on the day.
students all followed their own interests but still got back to the bus for 5pm.
The ATU tent had quite a few queries in relation to agriculture and the new veterinary medicine course. There was a lot of new machinery on view and also some vintage machinery was on the site. Livestock tents were also busy. They arrived back in Letterkenny just after 10 pm.
It was also a good opportunity to meet ATU agriculture graduates on trade stands.
In the end it was a good day.

🚜 Day 2 of the National Ploughing Championships 🚜
A bright dry morning with massive crowds already flooding in to the ploughing championships . Make sure and call into our agri lecturer Dwayne at the ATU tent on block 4 , row 68 . We will have lambing and calving demos , livestock handling simulators to identify best practice, NIR feed identification for immediate results on all feeds and forage , spin the wheel for some goodie bags and much more .
