The 14th installment of student placement insights looks as students on their second placement and comes from Jay, Sinéad, Éabha and Liam.
JAY:
For my second placement I was on a sheep farm in Burt, it was an enjoyable experience and I enjoyed lambing ewes and seeing the stock out on grass.
SINEAD
I did my placement with an agricultural consultant. I did Nutrient Management Plans to calculate how much fertiliser and what fertiliser a farmer can use. I also did some soil sampling, excel sheets for purchases of meal and medicines for inspections and audits.
ÉABHA
My second placement was at a feed and grain mill.
Picture 1 - is the grain store where I'd preform daily health and safety checks as well as checking grain health
Picture 2 - is the bagging store, this is where all the feed was bagged using a robot to bag the meal.
Picture 3- I was sending off samples from the sample room to get tested in the lab
Picture 4- is the sample room, this is where I brought all the samples that were taken from lorries and the weighbridge to store them
Picture 5- is a photo of the label for a maize sample
Picture 6 -is me completing a ration formula for a farmer who wanted to change his meal up to suit his cattle's needs.
LIAM
I have been working on a Beef and sheep farm for my second placement. I have spent 6 weeks on the Brogans farm which is located just 2 kilometres from Donegal town.

This a photo of an aubrac cow that has given birth a newborn calf that is an aubrac/ limousine mix.

This photo of hogget's being scanned to see if there unexpectantly pregnant.

This is a photo of ewe in an adoption crate, this is used so the adopted lamb can suck, and ewe is unable to kick the lamb off.

This is a photo of 6 drop calves that were 5 Aberdeen Angus and 1 Belgium Blue. These are bull calves born of dairy mothers that will be reared for beef.

Just two of our past graduates that attended the very successful woman in agriculture event hosted by The Milk Bar yesterday. Our own Hannah attended the event and bumped into plenty past and current students.

'Field of her own!' - we are 1 week away, register your interest today!!!

The day will feature two amazing panel discussions. The first is “Resilient Roots: Women Diversifying Irish Farms” with three inspiring local Donegal women sharing their experiences and journeys in agriculture.

Our second panel discussion is “From Farmyard to For You Page”, featuring three fantastic TikTok and Instagram influencers from the farming world that young girls may really enjoy hearing from.

We’re also delighted to have Ella McSweeney from Ear to the Ground as MC for the day.

There will also be businesses attending with stands, along with a fashion show, and lunch will be provided too.

"𝙈𝙚𝙞𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙖𝙡" community spirit of working together and supporting one another.

Another brilliant day spent by 𝙂𝙚𝙧𝙖𝙧𝙙, 𝙋𝙖𝙙𝙙𝙮 and 𝙈𝙖𝙧𝙮 in Glenveagh yesterday discussing Natura 2000, as part of the Le Chéile don Dúlra festival . Weather was not as glorious as last year but still a great day.
Well done to Emmet, Claire and team for organising such a great event and a special mention to ATU Donegal PhD student Josephine who gave her presentation as Gaeilge, maith thú.
