🎉🎉🎉 Congratulations to Matthew McCole on successfully defending his PhD thesis. His research was titled "Development and application of portable devices for the determination of essential nutrients in soil". Matthew is pictured with his supervisors Dr Denis McCrudden and Prof Margaret McCaul and Head of Department Dr Kim McFadden. Missing from the photo is Matthew's other supervisor, Dr Martin Bradley. Matthew is a superstar both in the boxing ring and in the laboratory! We wish you every success in the future. 🎉🎉🎉

Back inApril 2026, first year agriculture class in ATU Letterkenny visited a local dairy farm near convoy in east Donegal.
The farm walk included several topics, which included responsible antibiotic use in dairy cows, soiled water and slurry storage, shed ventilation and dairy cow housing, soil fertility and grass reseeding, TAMS grants, slurry use safety and external agitation points, calf welfare and heifer replacement including EBI, silage quality and dry matter digestibility.

The 15th installment of student placement insights looks as students on their second placement and comes from Saoirse and Clodagh.

SAOIRSE:
I done my second placement on a dairy farm outside Ballymote. The herd consisted of 80 dairy cows, 60 beef weanlings. The placement gave me a better understanding on calf care, milking and other general farm work. I found the 6 weeks very insightful.

CLODAGH
I completed my second placement on a sheep and beef farm. I got hands on experience with lambing the ewes , cleaning out and re bedding pens and sheep nutrition. We competed a lot of fencing work on the farm and set up paddocks for the ewes and lambs. I also got a look into the beef side of the farm and learned AI and Cidring cows. I found the placement very beneficial and I gained practical skills that will be help me in the future.

Recently the final year Agriculture Students at ATU Letterkenny visited the award winning Waterwheel Farm. Patrick as usual gave the students a comprehensive lecture about his farm, farm business structure and his other roles that he is involved in. This was followed with a farm walk the following day. Patrick covered all aspects of the farm from environmental to intensive agriculture and how both aspects can work in unison. Patrick also outline his new project so we look forward to seeing that when we return in 2027.
