🏆 Results of the 7th edition of the Competition for the Prof. Jan Czochralski Award are now known. The laureates are representatives of Politechnika Śląska, Politechnika Poznańska, and the Aleksander Krupkowski Institute of Metallurgy and Materials Science of Polska Akademia Nauk.

🔸 The laureate of the award for the best diploma thesis is Sebastian Kanik, MSc, from Silesian University of Technology (Politechnika Śląska) for his engineering thesis entitled “Surface Modification of Titanium Implants Using Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation and Oxygen Plasma Oxidation”.
🔸 The laureate of the award for the best doctoral thesis is Marta Izabela Przychodnia, PhD, from Poznan University of Technology (Politechnika Poznańska) for her doctoral thesis entitled “Fabrication and Characterization of Two-Dimensional Surface Alloys of Rare Earth Metals on Pt(111)”.
🔸 The laureate of the award for outstanding scientific and/or applied achievements is Maciej Szczerba, PhD, from the Aleksander Krupkowski Institute of Metallurgy and Materials Science of the Polish Academy of Sciences (Polska Akademia Nauk) for his work entitled “Reverse and Pseudo-Reverse Twinning in RSC Metallic Materials: From Single Crystals to Structural Materials”.

The competition recognizes the best diploma and doctoral theses, as well as outstanding scientific and/or applied achievements related to the fields of scientific and technical activity represented by the competition’s patron.

🌲 Where on Mars could the first tree grow❓Our scientists checked that!

💡 In the study, the Siberian pine – a coniferous tree that tolerates low temperatures 🌡 well – was selected as a model species. Based on observations of forests growing in harsh terrestrial conditions, scientists determined the temperatures required for the first pine tree to grow on the Red 🔴 Planet.

Discover the results of simulations conducted jointly by researchers from WUT, NASA Ames Research Center, San Jose State University and the University of Basel.

📌 The Institute of Heat Engineering at WUT hosted the 2nd edition of the nationwide Summer School of Nuclear Energy. The event was organized in cooperation with the Ministry of Energy, with its main theme focusing on the nuclear fuel cycle.

💡 The core program covered the complete scope of issues related to the nuclear fuel cycle–from uranium mining and enrichment, through fuel manufacturing and utilization in nuclear reactors, to spent fuel management and its safe disposal.

🎓 The sessions were attended by 72 students representing top Polish universities. Lectures and workshops in English were led by experts and practitioners from France, Canada, and the United States, representing leading entities and technology vendors from those countries.

🎓 Students from the SAE AeroDesign Warszawa took part in the Air Cargo Challenge, an international aeronautical engineering competition held this time in Stuttgart. ✈️

⚙️ Their task was to build an aircraft capable of carrying the heaviest possible payload within a specified ⏳ time. Our team achieved the best result in the group's history at this competition and returned richer in valuable experience.

👨‍🔬 Researchers from Warsaw University of Technology are participating in M-BARC (Microlaser acoustic sensors for mechanical barcoding of cells and particles), an international project. It aims to develop the world's first universal, non-invasive, and label-free platform for the mechanical barcoding of objects. By combining integrated photonics, acoustics, and microfluidics, the platform will enable high-sensitivity readout of the mechanical properties of microscopic biological and synthetic structures, including cells and particles. 🧫

📌 The project addresses key societal challenges in healthcare 🩺 and agriculture 👩‍🌾. Over the 42-month project implementation, the sensing platform will be developed, optimized, and experimentally validated in three areas: assisted reproduction (in vitro fertilization, IVF), diagnostics of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), and drug screening in the pharmaceutical industry.

🤝 The project is carried out by an international 🌎 consortium bringing together leading universities, research organizations, and innovative industrial partners. Warsaw University of Technology, specifically the Institute of Microelectronics and Optoelectronics at the Faculty of Electronics and Information Technology (Wydział Elektroniki i Technik Informacyjnych Politechniki Warszawskiej), is responsible for the development of integrated photonic technologies forming the core of the M-BARC sensing platform. The researchers involved in the project are: Muhammad Ali Butt, PhD, scientific leader of our team, Bartosz Janaszek, PhD Eng. and Marcin Kieliszczyk, M.Sc. Eng.

📆 The project officially started on July 1, 2026, and is scheduled to run for 42 months, with completion planned for December 31, 2029.

🏆 Aleksandra Tobolska, PhD, Eng., from Wydział Chemiczny Politechniki Warszawskiej won the award for the best poster presentation at the European Biological Inorganic Chemistry Conference 18 (EuroBIC 18).

👩‍💼 During the conference, Aleksandra Tobolska, PhD presented a poster entitled "The effect of phosphorylation on the redox activity of Cu(II) complexes with amyloid-β peptides exhibiting high affinity towards Cu(II)". 🔬 The research aligns with the ongoing search for the molecular mechanisms underlying the Alzheimer's disease, focusing on how post-translational peptide modifications influence their interactions with metal ions and oxidative stress-related processes.💡

📝 The authors of the awarded poster are: Aleksandra Tobolska, PhD, Eng.; Katarzyna Biernat, MSc, Eng.; and Assoc. Prof. Nina E. Wezynfeld, PhD, DSc, Eng. The study was conducted as part of a project funded by the National Science Centre (NCN) – SONATA grant.

💡 For decades, silicon has been the driving force behind the development of electronics. However, its capabilities are not limitless. Jakub Wojciech Sitek, PhD, from Cezamat PW - Centrum Zaawansowanych Materiałów i Technologii will lead a research project aimed at developing a solution that could support the next generation of electronic devices. 📱💻

➡️ The project, entitled SCALED – Scalable, Controllable and Atomically Flat Epitaxy of Doped 2D Semiconductors for Post-Silicon Electronics, aims to develop a scalable, reproducible and technologically viable method for doping monolayers of MoS₂ and WSe₂ directly during growth in an industrial metal-organic chemical vapour deposition (MOCVD) reactor. The researchers will use two carefully selected dopants: rhenium (Re) to obtain n-type conductivity in MoS₂ and niobium (Nb) to achieve p-type conductivity in WSe₂. 🔬 Quantum-mechanical calculations and previous experimental studies indicate that these elements are among the most promising dopants because their atoms can readily substitute the metal atoms in the crystal lattice without degrading the material's quality.

📝 The ESA - European Space Agency has announced the establishment of a new ESA Centre in Warsaw. The Centre's thematic focus aligns with the Civil Security Hub Poland project, co-developed by researchers from the Warsaw University of Technology as part of ESA's Space Resilience Nodes initiative.

💬 "This is a very important decision and a clear signal that Poland is a valued ESA partner," says Professor Katarzyna Osińska-Skotak, Principal Investigator of the Civil Security Hub Poland project at WUT and leader of Work Package 70. "The Centre will undoubtedly accelerate the implementation of satellite technologies in crisis management and strengthen Poland's resilience to threats. It will also enhance the international profile of Poland and its space sector organisations. The Warsaw University of Technology has extensive experience in developing satellite-based systems for environmental monitoring and infrastructure assessment. Many of our faculties are advancing space and satellite technologies, and I hope the ESA Centre in Poland will help bridge the gap between technology developers and decision-makers responsible for identifying implementation priorities."

💡🎓 Students from the Antenna Design Student Research Group at the Warsaw University of Technology have designed and built their own ground station for receiving data from satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO).

✅ The system designed and built by the students enables the reception of data from satellites 🛰️ operating in low Earth orbit, including the MetOp constellation managed by the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT). In addition to imagery, the station receives detailed 🌦️ meteorological and environmental 🌎 data, including atmospheric temperature 🌡️ and humidity 💦 profiles, soil 🌱moisture, snow 🌨️ and ice ❄️ cover, ocean wind 💨 speed and direction, and concentrations of atmospheric trace gases such as ozone, carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxide.

💰 The project was carried out with funding awarded through the Rector's grants programme for student research groups for the 2025/2026 academic year. The group received nearly PLN 47,000 to build the station under the project entitled Adaptive Beamforming Antenna Array for Receiving Signals from Low Earth Orbit Satellites in the L-band.

👷‍♀️👷 For the fourth consecutive year, students 🎓 and academic staff from Wydział Architektury Politechniki Warszawskiej have created a unique architectural installation at the Łazienki Królewskie / Royal Lazienki.

💡 This year's edition of the "Stawiamy_" project explores the idea of experimentation, understood both as a social concept and as an architectural and structural approach. At the heart of the project is the concept of the common table, which served as the inspiration for the Pavilion of Experiment.

📌 The installation is part of the "Stawiamy_" initiative, launched by Professor Anna Maria Wierzbicka. Previous editions resulted in the Pavilion of Freedom (2023), the Pavilion of the Future (2024), and the Pavilion of Community (2025).

📆 The Pavilion of Experiment will remain open to visitors until the end of September.
