In much of the Western classical music education system, performing music has traditionally been seen as something reserved for those with exceptional talent or professional training. However, based on the childhood experiences of its founder, Mauno Järvelä, everyone is equal when it comes to music. Everyone deserves the opportunity to experience the joy of making music—a belief that lies at the heart of the folk music tradition. To encourage more people to take part in the fiddle tradition, he developed the Näppäri teaching method.
Unlike the classical tradition, which often emphasizes technical perfection and artistic excellence, the Näppäri approach places the joy of playing music at the center of learning. Through specially arrangement, musicians of different skill levels can perform in same pieces. Even complete beginners can experience the excitement of making music with others, creating positive musical experiences that inspire them to continue learning and improving.
By bringing together professional musicians, teachers, children, adults, and amateur players from all walks of life, the Näppäri method has helped ensure that the Kaustinen fiddle-playing tradition is passed down from one generation to the next.
