First-year clinical mental health counseling students in Auburn’s College of Education are once again partnering with the Rural Health Initiative and Alabama Cooperative Extension System to bring mental health education to local students, continuing a successful outreach effort that connects classroom learning with community impact. This fall, Auburn counseling students will present lessons on stress management and coping skills to seventh- and eighth-grade students at Reeltown High School in Tallapoosa County. The presentations, scheduled for Oct. 30 and Nov. 6, are designed to help middle school students identify healthy coping strategies and better understand ways to manage stress and anxiety. Read more about this impactful outreach effort at the link in the comments.

*Inspiration:

What I love most about counselor education is getting to work directly with students and being part of their professional identity development. There is something incredibly rewarding about meeting students early in their training and getting to walk alongside them as they discover who they are as counselors, supervisors, educators, researchers, and leaders. As a former student-athlete, I also have a particular passion for working with student-athletes and understanding how those experiences shape identity, development, and life beyond sport.

*Research Focus:

At the center of my work is a pretty simple question: What helps people grow into who they are becoming? I’m interested in counselor and counselor educator development, particularly how supervision, teaching, and intentional professional experiences help build competence and confidence. I’m also passionate about working with student-athletes and exploring how the strengths, identities, and experiences developed through athletics influence their development and transition beyond sport.

*Proudest Achievement:

One of the things I am most proud of professionally is getting to help grow and shape Auburn’s Counselor Education doctoral program alongside Dr. Jill Meyer. It has been incredibly rewarding to be so involved in the development of the program while also getting to work closely with our doctoral students throughout their training. Watching students develop their identities as counselor educators and eventually step into the profession is easily one of my favorite parts of what I do.

*Career Path:

Professional sports, for sure! I worked for the Atlanta Falcons before returning to school to earn my master’s and Ph.D., so if I had not become a professor, I am pretty confident I would be working somewhere in professional sports.

*Current Reads:

Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer. It’s one of those books that completely pulls you into a world and experience you may know very little about beforehand.

Hobbies:

Spending time with my husband and our two littles, finding fun spots to eat, attempting to play tennis, and traveling!

*Travel:

Norway, again! It is probably my favorite trip I’ve ever taken, think Northern Lights, dog sledding, snowmobiling, and more snow than you know what to do with. I would go back in a heartbeat.

*Morning Routine:

Coffee. Absolutely coffee.

*Media Preferences:

Audiobook! I’m a big audiobook girl, especially because I can listen while I’m doing something else.

*Workspace:

Constantly cluttered and almost guaranteed to have a funky figurine or a piece of my kiddos’ artwork somewhere. I like bringing a little whimsy into the world.

*Time Travel:

Past, but only if I could actually interact with the people there! There is so much I would want to tell them, and probably even more I would want to ask. I’d want to hear their stories firsthand and know all the things history never quite captured.

*Student Spotlight!
Laney Powell
Rehabilitation and Disability Studies
Special Education for Health and Related Service Professions
Auburn University

Congratulations Laney Powell!

Laney is a Junior majoring in Rehabilitation & Disability Studies and pursuing a minor in Special Ed for Health Professionals.

We are proud of Laney and so pleased to share that she is a recipient of the Henson and Kirkland Endowed Scholarship at Auburn University.

Laney shared the following insights with us:

- The most meaningful part of my Auburn experience has been the opportunities for growth and the relationships I have built along the way. Auburn has opened doors I never thought possible and has challenged me to grow both personally and professionally. Through the people I have met, the experiences I have had, and the opportunities to serve others, I have created memories that will last a lifetime and gained the confidence to make a positive impact in my community.

- I have consistently pushed myself academically and strive to do my best in every class. Although balancing clubs, organizations, and other activities can be challenging, I have managed to make the Dean’s List three times since arriving at Auburn. This is a significant accomplishment for me because I struggled with the transition to college during my freshman year. That experience motivated me to work even harder and excel academically over the following semesters.
