Yesterday, ASE/EM students had the opportunity to connect with industry leaders and learn more about where a career in aerospace can take them.

We were excited to welcome representatives from AIVE AI Systems, Bell Flight, Intuitive Machines, Firefly Aerospace and Katalyst Space to campus for ASE/EM Industry Open House.

From conversations about careers and internships to insights into the skills employers are looking for, our students had the chance to ask questions, make connections and get a closer look at the industry they’re preparing to join.

Meet Puneet Singh, our newest ASE/EM faculty member! 🤘

Singh’s research focuses on computational aeromechanics, aircraft design, controls, modeling and simulation and multidisciplinary design optimization. His work brings together multiple aspects of aircraft design to help engineers develop better-performing, more efficient systems.

Before joining UT Austin, Singh gained industry experience working on advanced aircraft concepts at Overair and Archer Aviation. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from IIT Kanpur before completing his M.S. and Ph.D. at the University of Michigan.

Now, he’s bringing his expertise in computational aircraft design to ASE/EM as an assistant professor.

Today, we welcomed our newest graduate students to the Department of Aerospace Engineering and Engineering Mechanics with a day full of introductions, research insights, program overviews and opportunities to connect with the ASE/EM community.

Maruthi Akella has been named the recipient of the Joe J. King Professional Engineering Achievement Award from the Cockrell School of Engineering! 🎉

For decades, Akella has been advancing the fields of guidance, navigation and control, autonomy and astrodynamics — helping turn cutting-edge research into real-world aerospace innovation. 🛰️

This award celebrates his impact not only through groundbreaking research, but also through the generations of engineers and researchers he has inspired and mentored along the way.

The Moon is about to get hit by a rocket.

On Aug. 5, a spent Falcon 9 upper stage is expected to collide with the lunar surface and Texas Engineers are modeling what happens next.

Their simulations predict the size and brightness of the resulting plume and how far lunar dust and debris could travel. Why does that matter?

Because as we send more spacecraft to the Moon, we need to understand the effects of impacts like this, especially for future lunar instruments, bases and exploration.

And there’s a chance this one will be visible from Earth!

🚀 Summer Internship Spotlight! 🚀
 
Today we’re spotlighting aerospace engineering junior, Aishani Gupta! 💫
 
This summer, Aishani is interning at Firefly Aerospace, where she helps design and analyze launch vehicle components for the company’s Alpha rockets.
 
We asked Aishani to share what inspired her journey into aerospace and what her internship experience has been like so far:
 
“I’ve always dreamed of living on the moon, and this career will make it happen. I’m having an incredible time on the Unpressurized Structures team at Firefly Aerospace, where I get to improve the design of the Alpha rockets. The best part is being treated like a full-time employee and contributing work that will leave a lasting impact on the next generation of space initiatives. Some of the exciting projects in this internship include designing a composite manufacturing test coupon and making improvements to S1 interstage and S2 RP components. I’ve also had the opportunity to help with spacecraft assembly in the cleanroom over the past year. It’s so thrilling to be working at the forefront of lunar missions.”
 
We’re proud to have Aishani representing our program this summer and can’t wait to see all that she accomplishes next! 💫

🚀 Summer Internship Spotlight! 🚀
 
Today we’re spotlighting aerospace engineering senior Jason Rodriguez! 💫
 
As an Operations Site Intern with X-Bow Systems in Luling, Texas, Jason is working alongside engineers and technicians to support the manufacturing and production of solid rocket motors and related hardware. His role includes hands-on fabrication and assembly, assisting with tooling and CAD work, supporting shop floor operations, and creating technical documentation—all while gaining valuable real-world experience in rocket manufacturing, testing, and aerospace operations.
 
We asked Jason to share a little about what inspired his aerospace journey:
 
“I chose Aerospace Engineering after my first flight to New York at five years old. Looking out the window above the clouds was all it took to get me hooked.”
 
We’re proud to have Jason representing our program this summer and can’t wait to see all that he accomplishes next! 💫
