New research from the UAB School of Public Health, led by Dr. Dori Pekmezi and colleagues, highlights the potential of accessible, technology-supported interventions to improve health in underserved rural communities.

Published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, the study found that participants in the Deep South Interactive Voice Response (DIAL) program increased their physical activity levels, with 30% to 44% meeting national exercise guidelines after six months. The intervention combined automated phone calls, fitness trackers, and support from community health advisors to help participants build sustainable healthy habits.

Designed specifically for rural populations facing barriers to physical activity, the program demonstrates how innovative, community-engaged approaches can help reduce chronic disease risk and address health disparities.
