Five years after the transformational gift that helped shape the future of medical education at UAB, the Heersink School of Medicine gathered to celebrate its lasting impact.

A special piano recital in the Volker Hall atrium brought together students, faculty, staff, and leadership to honor Dr. Marnix and Mary Heersink. The event featured musical performances by medical students, recognition of the many advancements made possible through the Heersinks' generosity, and the announcement of Sept. 24 as "Heersink Day" by the City of Birmingham.

This week, the Heersink School of Medicine held the AI in Precision Medicine Symposium, a two-day event that convened leaders in artificial intelligence, translational science, and clinical care to explore how AI is transforming precision medicine. Recently, the Heersink School of Medicine recognized 23 faculty members for their appointment to endowed chairs and professorships during a special reception.

"Today is a celebration of people—our incredible faculty being honored, and the donors whose generosity makes their work possible," said Dean Agarwal. "An endowed chair or professorship is one of the highest honors we can offer. It recognizes exceptional achievement and provides the kind of support that truly makes a difference. It gives our faculty time to discover, to mentor, and to lead."

The Cardiology Interest Group recently kicked off the second year of the Aspiring Medical School Program at Barrett Elementary with a White Coat Ceremony.

Led by medical students, the program introduces elementary students to healthcare careers and STEM concepts through engaging, hands-on lessons. Several students have returned from last year’s cohort, and the program looks forward to supporting their continued growth as they explore future possibilities in healthcare.

Shin-ichi Kano, M.D., Ph.D., professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurobiology, has been named the latest recipient of the school's Featured Discovery award.

In his study, “Circulating extracellular vesicle microRNAs mediate immune modulation of social behavior in male mice,” Kano and his team studied the impact of cell-derived small membrane vesicles, known as extracellular vesicles (EVs), on brain function and behavior. The team discovered that EVs in wild-type mouse models successfully increased sociability in socially impaired male mice.
