The Office of International Engagement at the University of Northern Iowa recently attended the Passport to Prosperity, hosted by the Iowa International Center, an annual celebration recognizing international individuals whose leadership, service, and dedication are strengthening communities across Iowa.
The evening brought together community leaders, partners, and advocates to celebrate changemakers whose contributions are creating opportunities, fostering connections, and building bridges across cultures. Their stories were a powerful reminder of the impact that international engagement has across our state.
We were especially proud to celebrate Yoko Tanaka, Executive Director of the Japan America Society of Iowa, whom UNI was honored to nominate for recognition. A longtime friend and partner of the Office of International Engagement, Yoko has been a steadfast supporter of our initiatives, working closely with UNI's Japanese Outreach Initiative Coordinator to facilitate workshops, cultural programming, and opportunities for meaningful cross-cultural learning. She also played a key role in supporting UNI's Japan Festival and continues to bring people together through her passion for cultural exchange and community building.
Beyond celebrating this year's honorees, Passport to Prosperity provided an opportunity to reconnect with community partners, explore future collaborations, and strengthen relationships with organizations committed to international engagement across Iowa.
Representing UNI at the event were Carol Coronado-Park, Director of the Office of International Engagement, and Ava Deitrich, Student Services Coordinator.
Congratulations to Yoko and all of this year's honorees, and thanks to the Iowa International Center for recognizing individuals whose work helps make Iowa a more welcoming, connected, and globally engaged place.
