The official page for the Department of Speech and Hearing Science at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.

Part of the College of Applied Health Sciences. Established in 1973 within the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the Department of Speech and Hearing Science went through several name changes before finally becoming part of the College of Applied Health Sciences in 1991. The University of Illinois Speech Clinic began as an outreach program in a janitor's mop closet in Lincoln Hall in 1938. Dr. Severina Nelson could find no other space to conduct her speech therapy. Two years later, with the title of director of the speech clinic and a $2,000 grant, Dr. Nelson moved the clinic to a spacious new office in Gregory Hall. The Speech and Hearing Clinic was later housed in the Lorado Taft House where it remained until it moved to its present building in 1975. In 2007, the Speech-Language Pathology Clinic moved to a new, expanded, state-of-the-art facility located in Research Park. The Audiology Clinic and the Department of Speech and Hearing Science remain in the Speech and Hearing Science building.

The Information Accessibility Design and Policy (IADP) Professional Certificate Program at Illinois offers a three-course sequence covering disability and assistive technology, accessible electronic materials, and accessible web design.

A major step forward for children’s literacy!

Congratulations to Speech and Hearing Science Assistant Professor Meaghan McKenna on receiving a $1.87 million, five-year grant from the U.S. Department of Education to develop and evaluate a technology-based program connecting writing and reading instruction.

“Reading often receives greater attention than writing in classrooms, leaving writing underprioritized despite its important role in children’s communication, literacy development and learning across all subjects.” McKenna said

Through the WriteStart project, McKenna and her research team will help educators assess student writing, monitor progress and use the results to make instructional decisions for young children, including students with disabilities and those at risk for academic difficulties.

Congratulations to SHS Professor Fatima Husain on receiving a $1.5 million grant from the Misophonia Research Fund to establish the Misophonia Neuroimaging Consortium (MNC)!

Over the next four years, the MNC will bring together researchers from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Duke University, and the University of Sussex to study the brain mechanisms underlying misophonia through large-scale neuroimaging research.

By combining data from previous studies and collecting new MRI data, the consortium aims to better understand misophonia and identify distinct neurobiological profiles that can inform future research and interventions.

SHS is proud to celebrate Dr. Husain and her collaborators on this exciting achievement!

SHS student Sophie Campa had the incredible opportunity to participate in ASHA’s Hill Day in Washington, D.C., where she joined fellow advocates from across the country to learn about the legislative process and advocate for the speech, language, and hearing professions.

“I’m advocating because everyone should have access to high-quality care,” Sophie said.

As part of the Illinois delegation, Sophie met with the offices of Sens. Tammy Duckworth and Dick Durbin and Reps. Darin LaHood, Nikki Budzinski, Eric Sorensen, and Bill Foster to advocate for health care access, Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement, K–12 education funding, and student loan access for graduate SLP and audiology students.

The Department of Speech and Hearing Science was proud to support Sophie’s participation in this important advocacy experience and her commitment to the individuals and families she will serve.
