Urbana Seminary offers Master of Divinity (MDiv) and Master of Arts in Religion (MAR) degrees. Colonel Mustard, in the library, with a... While the contemporary genre of the mystery story was first developed in the late 1800's, its roots are much older, going all the way back to the apocryphal story of Bel and the Dragon, a story about Daniel written during the Maccabean era. The writers of the Golden Age, including G. K. Chesterton, Dorothy L Sayers, and Agatha Christie infused the genre with various aspects of their own Christian faith. This eight week class will explore the relationship between Christianity and detective novels, from its beginnings through the golden age, and beyond. C. S. Lewis described George MacDonald's Phantastes as the Book that "Baptized his Imagination." Others have described it as the first fantasy novel written for adults. Join us this weekend class either in person or over zoom, as we explore the historical context in which the book was written--including the influence of both Scottish Christianity and the Romantic movement, as well as a deep dive into the plot, structure, and symbolism of this book. We'd love to have you join us either as an auditor or to take it for credit. How should Christians think about technology? Is AI technology neutral, or does it come with its own set of values? How will AI impact humanity and our human future? How does AI shape our understanding of ourselves and others? What should we use AI for? Join us for this five week zoom class that starts this coming Monday! It can be taken for credit or audit, and is the last class Dr. Todd Daly will be teaching for us before he leaves for Texas. Did this picture get your attention? Then you want to consider taking Dr. Pearce Durst's class "Preachers on Screen" that starts on Tuesday! This eight week class explores how for those who do not attend church, their primary understanding of what a preacher is comes from film. This is an excellent class not just for people who love film or want to better understand how film works, but also for people who want to have better conversations about issues of faith with their unchurched friends, by understanding where they are coming from. Tonight’s Taste of Seminary talk from Dr. Pearce Durst is off to an amazing start! Dr. Pearce Durst is talking about the different ways that the church interacts (and can interact) with film. Next Tuesday his class on Pastors in Film starts—a class about how for many people, films shape their understanding of what a pastor is, and what that means for those who are trying to reach unchurched folks. Dr Pearce Durst is deep in thought while he is preparing for tomorrow night’s Taste of Seminary talk! Join us at 7:00 pm at the Champaign Public Library in the upstairs Friends Room (room 215) to hear a fascinating presentation: Film is often at the center of culture, reflecting the current time and place and offering critiques or echo chambers. But how can Christians engage with film in meaningful ways while remaining discerning? This talk offers a typology of the different ways Christian’s can engage with film, providing a practical approach to enter the cultural conversation.
