Lab Spotlight: Dr. Jessica Hartman’s Lab

What does CYP2E1 do beyond its well-known role in metabolizing drugs and environmental pollutants?

Dr. Hartman’s lab studies how this enzyme influences mitochondrial function, lipid and carbonyl metabolism, the liver-gut-brain axis, and responses to changes in diet and food availability. Using complementary research models, including cultured cells and C. elegans, the lab connects molecular mechanisms with whole-organism physiology.

Training is the most important part of the lab and for Dr. Hartman. Undergraduate, graduate, and staff researchers work together, with Dr. Hartman mentoring them as they build their skills and develop into increasingly independent scientists.
