GRAND OPENING & RECEPTION
The Centro Cultural César Chávez is bringing Hostile Terrain 94 to OSU—a participatory art project sponsored and organized by the Undocumented Migration Project.

This powerful exhibition consists of over 4,000 handwritten toe tags, each representing a migrant who lost their life attempting to cross the Sonoran Desert of Arizona between the mid-1990s and 2024. These tags are geolocated on a wall map of the desert, marking the exact locations where remains were recovered.

We invite the OSU community to experience and reflect on this impactful installation, which has been thoughtfully assembled with the help of OSU students, faculty, and staff.

Mark your calendars—The Centro is bringing the tianguis to campus!
Join us on April 25th from 5–9PM at the SEC Plaza for a fun evening filled with culture, color, and community!

But what is a tianguis?
More than just an open-air market, it’s a vibrant celebration rooted in tradition with fresh produce, handcrafted goods, delicious street food, and the spirit of connection. Originating in pre-Hispanic times, tianguis continue to thrive across Latin America, blending trade, culture, and community in one lively space.

Stay tuned we’ll be revealing the musical performers soon! You won’t want to miss it!

Join us for a vibrant celebration of Latine heritage as we embrace the spirit of “La vida es un carnaval,” a song interpreted by world-renowned Celia Cruz that reminds us that life, with all its ups and downs, is a joyful celebration.

This theme will explore the rich cultures of Latine communities, highlighting the resilience, passion, and festivity that define us. We’ll dive into the powerful message that life is full of challenges and hardships, but also full of beauty, music, and hope. From lively music and dance to storytelling and personal reflections, this month will demonstrate that, no matter what, “La vida es un carnaval.”

The Centro Cultural César Chávez is bringing the Hostile Terrain 94, a participatory art project sponsored and organized by the Undocumented Migration Project (UMP), a nonprofit research-arts-education collective, directed by anthropologist Jason De León from UCLA. The exhibition is composed of over 4,000 handwritten toe tags that represent migrants who have died trying to cross the Sonoran Desert of Arizona between the mid-1990s and 2024. These tags are geolocated on a wall map of the desert showing the exact locations where remains were found. This installation has been shown nationally and globally in close to 150 locations since 2019 and is currently ongoing.

The installation is to go up in May at the Student Experience Center. In the month of April we will be hosting a series of sessions to fill out the toe tags with information provided by the UMP. How can you help?
