Oregon State University, Geography Program.

Geography is the study of human use and interaction with the Earth and the identification of spatial and temporal variation in natural and human processes. Geography uses principles of mathematics, social science, and natural science to analyze and interpret change in the environment. Geographers study globalization and cultural diversity, develop and apply geospatial technologies, and help evaluate and manage resources, climate change, and environmental hazards.

Another job opportunity within the Science Branch at USGS EROS! EROS is filling a position for an AI expert to support land-change monitoring capabilities. The position would play a lead role in helping develop next generation land-change monitoring products at EROS, including gold standard, national-scale mapping applications such as the National Land Cover Database (NLCD) and LANDFIRE.

The positions opens for applications Monday and will remain open through October 31st. Graduating Soon? Explore the GISP-E Credential

Happy start to fall term!

As you settle into your classes, I want to share information about the GISP-Emerging (GISP-E) Exam, which may be of interest if you are approaching graduation this year.

The GISP-E credential is designed for students and recent graduates in geographic information science and related fields. The exam assesses knowledge and skills typically developed through GIS coursework and is administered online with remote proctoring.

If you are considering pursuing the credential, please note that registration for the fall exam period closes on November 2.

Some of the world’s clearest views of war begin in an Oregon State research lab.

Professor Jamon Van Den Hoek and the OSU Conflict Ecology Lab combine satellite imagery and other technologies to track damaged infrastructure and the movement of people in hot spots. Their findings allow journalists and humanitarian organizations to see where destruction is occurring and where help may be needed most.

“The work he does is exceptional and has made it possible to inform our readers not only about what is happening in Ukraine but in many other parts of the world, with an accuracy and efficiency that no one else has been able to achieve before,” said The New York Times graphics editor Marco Hernandez.
